10. SULPHURIC ACID 2022 – 2023.

 Scope:
 Large scale preparation
 Dilute acid properties.
 Concentrated acid properties: As an oxidizing agent, oxidation of
carbon & sulphur; as a dehydrating agent: dehydration of sugar &
copper [II] sulphate crystals and non‐volatile nature.

 Sulphuric acid: Oil of vitriol.

 Occurrence: Present in minute traces in hot springs, near sulphide beds, in

metallic sulphate salts.

 Preparation of sulphuric acid:

 S + 6HNO3 → 6NO2 + 2H2O + H2SO4
 Cl2 + SO2 + 2H2O → 2HCl + H2SO4
 SO3 + H2O → H2SO4
 SO2Cl2 + 2H2O → H2SO4 + 2HCl

 Concentrated Acid properties:

 Pure or concentrated H2SO4 is poorly ionized.
 Thermal decomposition H2SO4 yields nascent oxygen [O] which helps
in oxidation.
 Conc. Sulphuric acid behaves like a strong oxidizing agent, strong
dehydrating agent and non‐volatile acid.
1. H2SO4 is a Strong Oxidation Agent:
Reacts with metals, non‐metals, inorganic substances:
Non‐Metals: C + 2H2SO4 (conc.) → CO2 + 2H2O + 2SO2
S + 2H2SO4 (conc.) → 3SO2 + 2H2O

Inorganic 2HI + H2SO4 (conc.) → I2 + 2H2O + SO2

 Differentiate:
 Dilute Sulphuric acid and dil. Nitric acid:
Dilute sulphuric acid. Dilute nitric acid.
Add Barium chloride solution to dil. Adding Barium chloride solution to
H2SO4, it gives a white ppt. of dil. HNO3, it gives a soluble solution
Barium sulphate. of Ba(NO3)2; and no ppt. is formed.
