Incident Guide – Remote Area Rescue

SECTION: TAK
DATE: 03-2022
Training Objectives
• Provide guidance for using ATAK on a Remote Area
Rescue incident.
• The FireWeb training manual section for TAK has an extensive
video library as well as interactive tool to further your knowledge
on the tools outlined in this guide.
Remote Area Rescue
• The immediate challenge to a remote area rescue is getting an accurate victim
location
– Many times the patient is located on a trail without a detailed way of describing their location
– Many times they are lost
– GPS Coordinates delivered by a cell phone caller are a great tool to use to mark where a
patient location is.
• The Corona Dispatch receives GPS location on cell phone calls with a varying degree of accuracy
with its current system.
• The Coordinate Format from 911 calls is in the DD aka Degree Decimal format.
• Corona Dispatch can pass that information on to you at request in the call notes.
Marking a victim on the map

• There are two main scenarios and tools used to mark a position in ATAK
– You may be tasked with marking a position based on a GPS location relayed from
dispatch to go find that location
– You may be searching for a lost hiker without a defined GPS location and when you
locate them want to mark and share that location with other users.

– Go To tool – Used to mark a known location

– Point Dropper tool – Can both mark a known location or freehand
