C1L5: Writing the Reaction, Review, Critique Paper

The Writing Process

Writing is a process that we use to express our ideas and thoughts using characters, symbols, or
letters.
- Can be both product and process.
- Writing as a product focuses on the content and technicalities of writings.
- On the other hand, writing as a process is the series of steps in composing and producing texts
into a finished piece of writing.
The writing process is consisting of three (3) stages:
Pre-Writing
- Is the first stage in writing that includes the organization of ideas (Outlining), brainstorming, listing,
clustering, and questioning.
Writing or Actual Writing
- This stage includes the act of composing text (drafting). You will write and make use of all the ideas you
have collected in the pre-writing stage.
Post-Writing
- Once the rough draft is done, you need to proofread, revise, and edit your composition until it is ready
for the final copy to publish.

Reaction Paper vs. Review vs. Critique

Reaction Paper: An academic writing that focuses on your total experience about an event or reading
material. Reaction paper also requires the writer to analyze, give his reaction, and opinion on a given
article.
Ex. Seminar about “Climate Change”. You’re not just the sequence of events but your total reaction of the
events but also your feelings and insights after the event.
Review Paper: Writing a review means expressing your opinion about a book, event, place, etc. Reviews
are commonly seen as a blog or essay. It is a commentary of the writer rather than a mere summary of
events. It shouldn’t be unbiased as in writing review also goals to make an informed decision about the
review you’ve written.
Ex. Reading a quote from a famous book. In writing review, you can discuss whether you agree or
disagree on the quote. Provide an explanation as to why you chose to disagree or agree. Aside from that
you may also want to explain the symbolic and literal meaning of the quote. With this, you can either
persuade or dissuade your reader to read the book on where you got the quote.
Critique Paper: Written by an expert of a specific field, hence critique is considered as the most
academic. An intellectual discourse about the evaluation of a work or an event.
Ex. Literary Criticism.
