Unit IG2: Risk assessment

Declaration: By submitting this assessment (Parts 1 – 4) for marking I declare that it is entirely my own work. I understand that falsely claiming that
the work is my own is malpractice and can lead to NEBOSH imposing severe penalties (see the NEBOSH Malpractice Policy for further information).

Important note: You must refer to the document ‘Unit IG2: risk assessment – Guidance and information for learners and Learning Partners’ while
completing all parts of this assessment. Your Learning Partner should provide you with a copy, but it can also be downloaded from the relevant
resources section for this qualification on the NEBOSH website.

You should aim to complete this section in 100 - 200 words.
Note: this section can be completed after you have competed your risk assessment.
Outline how the risk assessment was carried To conduct the risk assessment, I had referred few websites such as;
out this should include:
• sources of information consulted; http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/coninder.htm and www.labour.gov.hk which was based on
• who you spoke to; and health and welfare at construction sites Mention some ILOs like C155, R164
• how you identified:
- the hazards; After studying these websites i went on to conduct a detailed inspection of the worksite
- what is already being done; and
and also inquired with workers whether they are facing any difficulty during work and
- any additional controls/actions that
may be required.
through this enquiry I made an assumption about how well the workers were aware of
company health and safety policies after that a meeting was conducted with safety officer
to identify whether there were any repetitive trends accidents occurring in the industry
over the past few years they showed me there accident bookend also some control
measures that are already in place

After going through case study of similar construction sites and few websites such as
http://www.ilo.org/safework/info international labour organisation codes [ILO] and
http://www.osho.gov. which helped me suggesting few additional control measures

Specific legal arguments: 100 to 150 words

Moral, general legal and financial arguments for ALL actions

Moral, general legal and financial MORAL
arguments
Infra builders PVT. LTD has a moral duty to protect all workers who work either in the worksite. For
the company health and safety of its workers is considered as its outlook and backbone. It is the
responsibility of the Organization to enable anyone employed with the company to meet high levels
of health and safety. Our company is a construction company and here the chance of Occurring
injury to workers is high. If any of one happens it will not only affect workers but also their families,
friends and colleagues.
Sometimes mental health of some workers will damage due to long term injuries. The main factor
relating to this is the reduction in staff morality of the co-workers and thereby the whole workers
mentality. In addition to that morality of the workers obviously linked to the condition of the
workplace. In case there are several accidents and ill health conditions in the workplace, morality of
the workers will be reduced significantly. As a result of reduction in the workers’ morale, quality and
productivity of the business will be affected adversely. So, the company has to provide reasonably
practical control measures in order to protect the workers.

FINANCIAL
When an accident is occurred or any worker becomes sick due to the workplace exposure, the
company has to face huge financial loss in terms of direct cost and indirect cost.

Learner number:00767858 Learner name: Haran suresh Page 16 of 24

Direct cost:
Direct or insured cost for accidents is usually considered those costs covered by workers compensation
insurance, damage to the equipment’s, tools, plant properties and other minor medical costs for the
accident.

Indirect Cost:

Indirect costs are all the uninsured additional costs associated with an accident. Indirect costs are
always much greater than the direct costs. Examples of indirect costs are lost. production time,
productive time lost by an injured employee, reduced morale among employees and lower
efficiency, Business interruption, Loss of orders, Loss of corporate image, Compliance with any
enforcement notice served etc. Here, most of the losses are uninsured costs. In other hand, by
implementing recommended control measures, company can avoid the accidents and ill-health and
these costs would have become the profit of the organization.

LEGAL:

Employer has a legal duty to provide safe work, safe equipment and material as per the ILO code
ILO convention 155 (C155), ILO Recommendation (R 164), OSHA Standards etc. Are these laws
are violated ends up in an accident, following an accident there will be enforcement action in the
form of fine and imprisonment. If organization fails to achieve those standards, then enforcement
agencies can take further action. At first, they aware the organization through general notice after
that they take further steps. They can stop the work which has potential to harm the employees.
Enforcement authorities can also demand to start the working after making certain improvements or
taking respective control measure in order to make the risk factor low. In case of any severe
accident overseeing chief can be imprisoned and firm license can be cancelled

Consideration of likelihood AND severity The likelihood of electrical hazard is high because it mainly affects workers who
• types of injury or ill health are doing welding work. that damaged electrical wire can lead to electric shock
• number of workers at risk who come in contact with the electric wire.
• how often the activity is carried
out SEVERITY is classified in to four categories:
• how widespread the risk is
• Minimal: no injury or damage occurred.
• Minor: injury requiring first aid and/ or slight damage caused to
plant/equipment/buildings.
• Major: injury requiring hospital treatment/stay and/ or significant damage caused
to plant/equipment/buildings.
• Catastrophic: death and/ or irreparable damage to plant/equipment/buildings.

The severity of the hazard is major and catastrophic. The injuries that occur, due to the
hazard are burn injuries, electric shock, and even death also. It also causes damage to
equipment and the workplace.

Approx 11 workers work closely in that area.
