What is Empiricism?
Empiricism is a philosophical theory that
emphasizes the role of experience in
acquiring knowledge. It is a view that all
concepts originate in experience, and all
rationally acceptable beliefs or
propositions are justifiable or knowable
only through experience.

Empiricism explains how human beings

acquire knowledge and improve their
conceptual understanding of the world. In
science, empiricism heavily emphasizes
using experiments and observation to
collect evidence and draw conclusions.
Immanuel Kant
“All our knowledge begins with the senses, proceeds
then to the understanding, and ends with reason.
There is nothing higher than reason.”

EXPLANATION

His quote emphasizes the importance of sensory experience in the

acquisition of knowledge, which is central to empiricism. Kant's
philosophy was heavily influenced by empiricist thinkers such as
David Hume, who argued that all knowledge is derived from
sensory experience.

However, Kant also believed that reason plays a crucial role in

shaping our understanding of the world and that it is necessary to
use reason to make sense of our sensory experiences. In this way,
Kant's philosophy can be seen as a synthesis of empiricism and
rationalism.
David Hume
“Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the
passions”

EXPLANATION

Hume argued that inductive reasoning and belief in causality

cannot be justified rationally; instead, they result from custom and
mental habit. Hume's critique of rationalism is based on his belief
that reason alone is not sufficient for understanding the world and
human experience.
Conclusion
Empiricism is a philosophical view that emphasizes the role of
empirical evidence in the formation of ideas and knowledge,
rather than innate ideas or traditions. Empiricists argue that true
knowledge or justification comes only or primarily from sensory
experience. The conclusion of empiricism is that knowledge is
gained, not only triggered, by our experiences, be they sensorial
or reflective. The overall conclusion of the philosophy of
empiricism is that it is as vibrant and defensible today as it ever
was. In science, empiricism heavily emphasizes the use of
experiments and observation to collect evidence and draw
conclusions
