1. What is the role of philosophy in education?


*“Education is living through a continuous reconstruction of experiences. It is the development
of all those capacities in the individual which will enable him to control his emotion and fulfil his
possibilities.”

It is a practical philosophy according to Pragmatism, because of the following:
 It aims at developing efficiency of the pupil through activities and experience.
 Education should enable the child to solve his daily problems and lead a better life.
 It is a work philosophy.
Activities lie at the centre of all educative process.

1. A. Why is philosophy important in formulating educational goals and objectives?

According to John Dewey:


■John Dewey came to Chicago in1894 with his wife Alice Dewey, to start a school in
order to test his theories of learning.
■He believed that learning was active and children came to school to do things.
■That learning arithmetic would come from learning proportions in cooking or figuring
out how long it would take to get from one place to another by rule.

school’s programs and projects.
Hello dear doctor teacher Deb, I am Eddiely Teodoso Sayam – Olvido. I graduated last April
04, 2014 and I’m glad to say that I am favored to be one of the student of those competent
professor in my time and I am proud to say that I adopt some of their attitude until now I
practiced it.
Why did I choose this school: Because they have quality education that is affordable. About
NONESCOST: The school is an exclusive school for medical courses. They have competitive
instructors. The facilities were not quite amiable for learning.
I had choose NONESCOST as my school and until now in my graduate school, because I really
like their salient features like their vision, mission, goals and objectives. It really alike to the
recent school I have working last month 3 months ago in Tiglawigan National High School. They
are really aligned in terms of the programs and projects that school was implemented. All of the
faculty members always set meeting for the improvement of the school facilities and to tackle
latest update for the improvement if the school, to support and reinforce constructive
relationships and uphold their core values of respect and collegiality, accountability and
integrity, and shared responsibility and most importantly the school principal was so fixed with
regards to the over all results of every meeting and its all done very well and precisely I can say
that discipline in each faculty members was being implemented in terms of their time in and off
course in the deadline of passing of their assignment and work. This was also was literally
exercised by assigned teachers in their corresponding students I am glad to say that I am one of
those teacher really follow thus steps and I really thankful to our dear principals and
supervisors. This would be all doc Deb. Thanks alot to the opportunity you were given to
express our innermost feelings...God bless you more Doc and keep safe always...
I am glad to present that NONESCOST was so perfect and their
Vision goes this way:
An empowered, productive, self-reliant, and vigilant, individual/community in the service area.
Mission: To make NONESCOSTian instrument of increasing productivity, alleviating the quality
of people's lives and protecting the environment and sustaining biodiversity in its service
areas.
To produce globally viable graduates through innovative learning and research environment,
relevant community and industry engagement and to contribute to nation-building by providing
education, training, research and resource-creation opportunities in various technical and
disciplinal areas.
This process will provide ongoing conversations to support and reinforce constructive
relationships and uphold our core values of respect and collegiality, accountability and
integrity, and shared responsibility.
2. How does philosophy find its place in the Philippine educational system as a whole
and the following subsystems:
According to the provisions of the Constitution of the Philippines (1935), all schools shall
“aim to develop moral character, personal discipline, civic conscience, vocational

There are Perennialism, Essentialism, Progressivism, and Reconstructionism. These
educational philosophies focus heavily on WHAT we should teach, the curriculum
aspect. For Perennialists, the aim of education is to ensure that students acquire
understandings about the great ideas of Western civilization.

The study of philosophy helps students to develop both their capacity and their
inclination to do critical thinking. Other disciplines also help in fulfilling this function,
but philosophy contributes distinctively, intensively, and extensively to a student's
ability to think critically.

2.1 Learner
According to this theory it is best for learner in terms of discipline individually and in
terms of groups. It explains that the:
 Freedom as an important element.
 Promotes self discipline.
 Condemn enforced discipline and advocate social discipline based on child’s interest ,
activities and a sense of social responsibility.
 According to pragmatists,
“Discipline is primarily social and it emerges through active participation in group and
purposeful activity.”

2.2 Curriculum
Pragmatic curriculum is framed according to the following principles:
 Principles of dynamism and flexibility.
 Principle of utility- subjects like language, literature, physical education, hygiene, history,
geography, civics, sociology, psychology etc. Priority is given to social sciences to make
the students good, cooperative and useful citizens. Natural sciences come next.
 Principle of activity and experience , agriculture, wood craft and industrial sciences.
Principle of integration.

2.3 School Environment


●Of course Any social environment which inspires children for experimentation constitutes a
school for them.
●A social institution which develops in child a socila sense and sense of duty towards society
and nation.
●According to John Dewey:
●“School is the embryo of community.”
●“School is a miniature society.”
●“An instrument of transmission and transformation of the culture.”

2.4 Classroom

How is pragmatism applied in the classroom?

Pragmatism is an educational philosophy that says that education should be about life
and growth. That is, teachers should be teaching students things that are practical for
life and encourage them to grow into better people. Many famous educators, including

How is pragmatism relevant in today's classroom?
Pragmatism regards teacher as a helper, guide and philosopher. The chief function of a
pragmatic teacher is to suggest problems to his pupil and to stimulate them to find by
themselves the solution which will work. The teacher must provide opportunities for the
natural development of innate qualities if the children.
2.5 School Programs
●Contributes to the development of a system which is vocation centred.
●Recognizes that an individual should be socially efficient and productive, the
curriculum duly takes note of it.
●Another important principal given by pragmatism is the principle of integration.
●Project method.
●Helps to realise the value of today’s life.
●Saves child from the burden of education which is too much centred on books.
2.6 Development of the teacher; school manager; the employee; the community leaders; the
culture.
●As a friend, philosopher and guide. (School manager)
●Not a dictator but only a leader of a group.(The community leaders)
●Should have knowledge of student’s interest and provide the social environment. (The

●Should have knowledge of social conditioning. ( The employee)

● Natural development and Development of social efficiency of each barangay or cities.
