1.

After learning about Manuel Quezon’s and Jose Laurel’s administration as Philippine
presidents, what do you think were the most significant contributions of each leader
during their respective terms?
Promotion of national unity was the most significant contribution of Manuel Quezon
during his term. He give importance in recognizing the value of developing a feeling of
shared identity, solidarity, and cooperation among the country’s many ethnic groups. This
contribution of Manuel Quezon highlights the important of his constituents’ culture and
heritage that helps the country to be a better place.
During Jose laurel’s period, preservation of Philippine culture is the most significant
of all of his contribution to the country. Cultural programs, education and preservation
institutions were set up to promote Filipino arts and traditions. Despite of Japanese
influence, Filipino language which is tagalog, literatures and history were taught. Because of
this contribution, Filipinos are given a chance to show their talents in creating or building
arts and crafts.

2. Reflecting on Jose Laurel’s controversial presidency during the Japanese

occupation, what are your thoughts on his collaboration with the occupying forces?
Do you believe his actions were justified under the circumstances?
Jose Laurel’s presidency during Japanese colonization was one of anxiety, violence and limited
options because some says that he was a puppet president who is acting like a servant of what the
occupiers’ interest while others claim that he assumed he took the position to lessen Filipino’s
suffering and protect them by making his self-serving to the occupiers. I’m not present during that
time when he became the president of the Philippines but on my opinion, I can say that his action
is right in that situation because as a leader it is hard to stand by yourself protecting a lot of people
surround you who trusted and believe on you. His action gave Filipinos a mandatory study of the
Japanese language and forced them in joining military as evidence of his collaboration. Some may
say that his action is wrong and some may say it is right. For me his actions is right because he
make his self as a servant to the occupiers just to protect his people.
