PRACTICAL 1: IBS LIGHWEIGHT ROOF TRUSS INTALLATION

Introduction
Industrialised Building System (IBS) is a technique of construction whereby components
are manufactured in a controlled environment, either at site or off site, and transported,
positioned, and assembled into construction works. “Industrialised Building Systems” (IBS)
is often misinterpreted as systems limited only for the construction of buildings. In fact, IBS
covers all types of structures as the word “building” actually relates to “constructing”.
There are five main IBS groups identified in Malaysia, there are:

1) Pre-cast Concrete Framing, Panel and Box Systems – pre-cast columns, beams, slabs,
3D components (balconies, staircases, toilets, etc)

2) Formwork Systems – tunnel forms, EPS-based forms, beams, and columns moulding
forms, permanent steel formworks,

3) Steel Framing Systems – steel beams and columns, portal frames, roof trusses,

4) Prefabricated Timber Framing Systems – timber frames, roof trusses,

5) Block Work Systems – interlocking concrete masonry units (CMU), lightweight

concrete blocks.
1.0 OBJECTIVE

a. Recognize necessary tools and equipment used in installation of roof trusses

Components

1. roof battens
2. top Chord
3. Pitching Point
4. Bottom Chord
5. Webs
6. Fascia
4.0 METHOD OF INSTALLATION
Roof truss set-out must be as per correct plan. It is vital that Roof truss set-out is completed
with reference to the Roof Framing Layout to ensure all required measurements are
transferred to the frame/supporting structure

Refer to plan as attached in Appendix 1 fer setting out roof truss.

4.1 Fabrication process

1) Measure the dimensions of each truss member to be cut based on the dimensions on
the plan
2) Cut and label each member.
3) Trim and notch -channel at its top, bottom & horizontal.
4) Setting and fabricate the truss members.
5) Dab the same truss with equivalents size.
6) Stack and store the truss at the appropriate place

4.2 Installation process

1) Marking and fix L - bracket on roof beam

2) Hoist and sequence the truss on the roof beam as per drawing
3) Stand the steel truss and fix the temporary bracing
4) Install hip rafter and valley track (If any)
5) Install perimeter batten.
6) Install roof insulation.
7) Install roof batten.
8) Install lateral and diagonal bracing.
9) Tighten L - Bracket.
10)Install roof accessories (Facia board etc.)
11)Perform visual inspection.

Conclusion

As conclusion, steel framing systems is one easy method in construction. Usage of steel
gives more advantages compared to the usage of wood. Steel results in fewer wasted
materials, it would not warp, bow, rot or fall viction to termites, steel also make assembled
walls easier to handle, steel has superior fire rating and can also withstand extremely
heavy wind loads. Based on our project, the usage of steel framing systems is at the column
and roof. By using this type of industrialisation, trusses can carry its load by bending along
both axes. It must be supported by columns that a spaced equally in both directions
