MA ELE SECTION 4
PED 701

Pedagogy is the study of the theory and practice of education. It is concerned with the underlying
values and principles that influence our approaches to learning, teaching, and assessment. The
traditional application-of-theory model appears to be rather ineffective and is currently being
replaced by other, more reflective approaches (Korthagen, F. & Kessels, J. 2018). With what you
have learned from this lesson, consider the following questions as your guide in writing a job-
embedded reflective journal.

• Has there been a gap between theory and practice?

Throughout history, there has always been a gap between theory and practice. Theoretical
knowledge is often idealistic and detached from the realities of everyday life. While theories
provide a framework for understanding the world, practical experience is necessary to test their
validity. This gap can be seen in various fields such as politics, economics, and education.
However, it is through bridging this gap that progress is made. By applying theoretical concepts
to real-life situations and adapting them accordingly, we can achieve a more effective and
efficient society.

• In your own experience, how have you bridged your understanding of pedagogical
theories and your teaching practices?
In my own experience, I have bridged my understanding of pedagogical theories and my
teaching practices by constantly reflecting on my lessons and seeking feedback from both
students and colleagues. By staying informed about the latest research in education, I am able
to incorporate evidence-based strategies into my teaching. Additionally, I regularly attend
professional development workshops and conferences to deepen my knowledge of pedagogical
theories and learn new instructional techniques. This ongoing process of self-reflection and
professional growth has allowed me to continuously refine my teaching practices and create a
more effective learning environment for my students.

• How has your understanding shaped your identity as a teacher, a school principal, or
a school supervisor?

My identity as a teacher has been molded by my perspective of education, which places a strong
emphasis on the value of fostering an inclusive and happy learning environment. I work hard to
help every kid feel like they belong, considering their individual problems and skills. As the
principal of a school, my understanding has molded me into a supporter of student-centered
strategies, encouraging cooperation and creativity among employees. Finally, my knowledge has
helped me prioritize professional development and support for teachers as a school supervisor,
making sure they have the resources and skills necessary to succeed in their positions. All things
considered, my comprehension has made me a better teacher who values fairness, compassion,
and ongoing learning.
