Keep Evangelism in Sunday School
No area on the Sunday School screen has become more blurry that the area of evangelism. Over time evangelism has
seeped out of Sunday School. Evangelism was once the proud purpose and mission of Sunday School.

How does a church become a Great Commission church? The best way is by pursuing the Great Commission
through Sunday School!

(Remember that mission is best accomplished in the context of a small group and evangelism is part of the mission.)
 How does a Sunday School become a Great Commission Sunday School? Her classes must be pursuing the
Great Commission.
 How does a Sunday School class become a Great Commission class?

The teacher leads the class to reach out to the lost and unchurched.
It is imperative that classes have leadership that personalizes the call to evangelize and promote the cause
for all to be Great Commission Christians.

Why Do Believers Not Witness?

1. We may have become more _______ by the world than by the Word.
The word of God clearly states that we are to be condition.
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and
of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you
always, even to the end of the age.” (Matt. 28:19–20)

This does not give us the right to be ugly or obnoxious, but it gives us the right and responsibility of “speaking the
truth in love” (Eph. 4:15).

2. We are _____.

Many people have a fear of sharing. Many feels rejected by others who do not share their convictions, lifestyle, and
worldview. Jesus said we would be rejected, even hated.

We cannot excuse our disobedience on fear. If God has commanded it, then, by faith, we are to be obedient.
3. We need _____.
Every church should help their congregation know how to share their testimony, or use a gospel tract, and be able to
take the Scripture and lead someone to faith in Christ. It is actually not that difficult because the gospel message is
simple.
4. We are not in ______ with the Lord as we should be.
This is the greatest hindrance to believers witnessing. Rejection, fear, and lack of training may play into our lack of
witnessing a little, but overwhelmingly it is a fellowship issue. Jesus illustrated this well in Luke 15 where He taught a
parable using three stories

5. We lack a church ____.

Sunday School is the church's strategy to reach lost and unchurched people! What good is a sermon if there is no
strategy to implement its truth? Sunday School gives the church a practical way to collectively pursue the Great
Commission.

 How does a church go after a couple in their thirties that becomes interested in spiritual issues?
 How does a church reach out to high school students who need Christ?
 How does a church reach that couple who just got married or those median adults who just moved into the
community? With our age-appropriate Sunday School classes!

Sunday School is the church's strategy to reach lost and unchurched people!
Individual Sunday School classes form a natural connection for the church's outreach strategy and assimilation
strategy.

This strategy provides an easy way to employ continual “touches” on the prospect that will help build a relationship.
When a class receives a prospect, we ask them to make an initial visit. After the initial visit we ask them to follow up each
week thereafter with sequential contacts of Mail, Telephone, and Visit. The “touches” on the prospect look like this:

Week 1: Make initial visit.

Week 2: Mail them a note (can be e-mail).
Week 3: Telephone them.
Week 4: Visit them again.

Adult Class Outreach Leaders

The class teacher already has much responsibility without taking on additional tasks. The outreach leader should
coordinate and direct the class's outreach efforts in reaching her prospects.

Distribute prospect cards for the purpose of follow-up by mail, telephone, or visit. It also provides a time to
retrieve any cards that need to be turned back in.

On a monthly basis have someone in the class share a testimony. People who can share their testimony before
the class can share it with a class prospect. This provides a great practice field. Hearing a testimony of someone's
salvation experience also fuels the evangelistic fire of others. When you listen to others share how they got saved,
it prompts you to want to see other people saved.

Each adult class is asked to form a Strategic Mission Partnership (SMP) with a foreign missionary. This
partnership entails the class praying for the missionary and going to his part of the world to help him with his
work. Classes raise their own support to do this. I am thrilled to report that we have hundreds of Sunday School
members all over the world in a year's time. Jesus cast the vision of winning the world when He gave us the Great

Commission. He then gave us the strategy by which to accomplish it in Acts 1:8. Adult class outreach leaders lead
their classes to be involved in “our” Jerusalem and around the world. They serve as the class “Acts 1:8 strategist.”

Teaching Content with Intent
 The greatest job in the world is preaching.
 The second greatest vocation in the world is teaching.

 Teachers communicate knowledge; they bestow wisdom; they add value; they give potential; they build futures;
and they impart life! In fact,
 teachers have the unique privilege of participating in the two greatest vocations there are!

Their preaching platform also gives them the privilege to lead the church. It is the principle of osmosis as the teaching
and preaching ministries gradually absorb the platform to lead.

Jesus taught us truth that profoundly impacts a teacher's ultimate goal, which is to produce obedient
Christians.

“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments”

(John 14:15 HCSB, emphasis mine)

Sunday School teachers should teach for the sake of obedience and not just for the sake of knowledge.

 Our content is no longer a stand-alone activity; our content now has intent.
 Obedience must come even without the benefit of understanding.

The teacher is greatly helped by following the pattern of Peter in responding to the two questions posed him in Acts
2. We should move people from what the Scripture means to how to apply them.
