V.1.1.21

1. Generalities

The ELREC TERRA is a high productivity 20 Channels Receiver dedicated to underground resistivity and
chargeability measurements

This receiver has the advantage to synchronize automatically with any type of IP transmitter generating
a square 100% duty cycle (+ / -) or 50% duty cycle (+ / 0 / - / 0)

It’s supplied by its own internal battery or an external one (12V standard car battery type)

External Switch boxes (Switch PRO or Switch TERRA) can be connected to the ELREC TERRA unit for
Multi-electrodes acquisition (2D/3D ERT)

2. Safety Instructions

Please, read carefully the operating and safety manual prior to setup. The non-respect of
these instructions can lead to people or animals getting hurt or damaged.

These notes warn for things that can lead to people or animals getting hurt or to
equipment getting damaged

Read carefully the operating and safety instructions as all labels affixed to the device. Be sure you
understand their meaning before use. If you do not understand or have doubts about any point of this
user’s manual, contact IRIS INSTRUMENTS for an explanation or a demonstration.

- Keep the user’s manual with the device for future reference. Thus, keep it intact, readable and
at the disposable of qualified persons during the entire life of the device. Be sure that all the
users have read the user’s manual and safety instructions.

- The use of a device in accordance with the safety instructions does not guaranty the absence
of risks. Proceed carefully. Do not use this device if you have a doubt on the correct and safe
way to use it.

4
- In all circumstances, the user must scrupulously respect the entire instructions of the user’s
manual. He must also comply with all applicable local and national laws of the jurisdiction of
using of the device.

- People under the influence of drugs, alcohol, pharmaceutical products or any other product
that might disrupt their reaction should not perform any operation or manipulation of the
device.

- This device is designed for industrial use only.

- By principle, electrical methods used in geophysics generate electric and magnetic fields which
may eventually interfere with pacemakers. We therefore advise people with implants to
consult their physician.

According to CISPR 11 norm, this equipment is listed in Group 1, class A.

- Group 1: Equipment has intentionally generated and/or uses conductively-coupled radio

frequency energy that is necessary for the internal function of the equipment itself.

- Class A: Equipment is suitable for use in all establishments other than domestic and those
directly connected to a low-voltage power supply network that supplies buildings used for
domestic purposes. There may be potential difficulties in ensuring electromagnetic
compatibility in other environments due to conducted and radiated disturbances.

Below is a list of the major risks and precautions to be followed before and during the use of the device:

- Be sure that the equipment is in good working order before leaving on the field.

- Use only cables in good conditions, sufficiently isolated and well adapted. Replace any worn
cable.

- Follow rigorously handling and operation instructions.

- Be careful when you wear the device / battery: Use your knees, and not your back, to carry the
device. When you carry the device by the front face, use either both handles or the carrying
strap.

- The device must not fall during its use. Place it down flat, directly on the ground, or slightly
elevated to avoid any falls from heights. The power cable can be rigid and create a barrier for
the operator.

- The connection of the device to excessive voltage source can cause irreversible damages to
the device. Make sure you use the right voltage source.

5
- Be sure that nothing and nobody can touch the cables and electrodes during the operating of
the device.

- Protect the working area using safety cones.

- Use non-metallic objects and tools to avoid any electrical contact with the cables and
electrodes (meter tape, hammer, …)

- Always inform about your presence on the field. Communicate clearly between operators on
the field using walkie-talkies that have been checked before going to the field.

- Be careful when using the device in a damp environment. The device is designed to work under
the rain but not under water

- IRIS Instruments products are not designed for use in hazardous environments.

- This device is not intended for use in residential environments and may not provide adequate
protection to radio reception in such environments.

- Do not use the device in case of thunderstorm. If a thunderstorm should come

up during the measurement, then first stop a possible ongoing measurement
process and disconnect the cable from the device without touching any
conducting part. Never leave the cables connected to the device overnight
unless they are equipped with adequate lightning protections since a thunderstorm may occur.

- Protect the battery during the measurement so that they cannot be touched.

The assembly and maintenance operations must be realized according to the procedure, the
preparation conditions and the environment described in the maintenance documentation, by
persons with the training and qualifications required to work on electrical equipment

- Some parts of the device are used to dissipate excess of heat produced by the components.
The parts and components remain hot for some time after switching off the device. Be careful
not to burn yourself in contact with these parts.

- Use tools in good conditions and suitable for the work to be done. Be careful not to drop any
piece of metal into the device (screw, wiring cables, tools…)

- During all life phases of the device, all operation that is not described in the user’s manual is
strictly prohibited. Always use accessories and spare parts approved by IRIS Instruments.

- Risk of explosion if internal battery is replaced by an incorrect type. Only use battery
recommended by IRIS Instruments.

6
- It is strictly forbidden to anyone to make mechanical or electrical modifications to the device,
to modify the functions or technical documents except those recommended by
IRIS Instruments.

Note :
To help you, IRIS Instruments proposes a Security Pack that feature Safety cones labelled “Danger, High
voltages”. They allow to minimize the risk of contact with the electrodes, especially if they are distant
from the operator and hidden by vegetation. Moreover, considering the voltage levels present, the
wearing of personal protective equipment is highly recommended (mainly insulated gloves class 1 and
insulating shoes).

Disclaimer:

IRIS Instruments sell the ELREC TERRA on the understanding that it will be used by qualified
geophysicists or geophysical field personnel that are aware of the risks inherent in the use of high
voltage and high current Induced Polarization Transmitters.

IRIS Instruments cannot be held responsible for any consequential damages of any kind, resulting
from the use of the ELREC TERRA

8
The ELREC TERRA has 2 internal Lithium-ion batteries (14.4V / 6.8 Ah / 97.9 Wh)

- If you need to supply it with an external battery, use only the cables delivered by IRIS
Instruments. The sections used are consistent with their length (4 mm² for 1 m). If you need to
use longer cables, use some cables with a bigger section so as to avoid high voltage drops in
those cables.
Use a 12V fully charged battery (standard car battery) with a min. capacity of about 60 Ah so
as to be able to work a full day (in standard conditions)
Respect the polarity of the battery
Contact support@iris-instruments.com if needed.

Be careful: The ELREC TERRA can accept a max input voltage of 20V – beyond, serious internal
damages will occur.

4. In-the-field implementation

In “VES, Profiling” mode, connect the reception electrodes by some cables plugged into the 21 blue
terminals (if 20 channels are used) and connect the injection cables into AB terminals, of the front
panel.
In the “ERT” modes, connect the multicore cables to the rear side sockets of the ELREC Terra Switch
unit or to the external Switch box (TERRA or PRO) plugged into the “Extension Link” socket of the ELREC
Terra unit and link each take-out of the multicore cables to an electrode (metallic stake or porous pot).

9
Make sure of a good quality of contact between the electrodes and the ground so as to be in the best
conditions,
- Digging more the stakes and pouring salted water if necessary.
- Using non-polarizable electrodes instead of metallic electrodes, to avoid electrodes
polarization effect, and in case of hard soil
Use the internal charged battery or connect the external 12V battery with cables delivered with the
system (or similar):

2- One pair of 4 mm cables with clamps for external battery connection (delivered with the system)

Make sure previously that the battery (Internal or External) is fully charged.
Don’t use a too old battery which could indicate a good voltage on no load, but which would be
quickly not sufficient as soon as the injection process has started.

ANNEX 3: IP PARAMETERS AND CHARGEABILITY

The partial chargeability measurements (Mi) and the average global one deduced (Mg) give some
information regarding the ability of the soil to charge itself due to a current flow.
The partial chargeability of the window ″i″ is measured thanks to the following formula:

1
Mi =  Vdt
VMN ⋅ TMi TMi

And the global chargeability is computed thanks to the following formula:

n

 (M ⋅ TM ) i i

Mg = i =1
n
(n: number of IP windows)
 TMi
i =1

The discharge phenomena observed during the relaxation time can be described according to the
following curve:

Voltage (mV)

VMN

M1
M2
M3

Vdly Mdly TM1 Time (ms)

Current injection time Relaxation time

With the ELREC TERRA unit, up to 20 IP windows can be used to define the decay curve.
The number of IP windows available for the measurement depends on the type of IP mode and on the
current injection time:
 Current injection times available (cf. II.1.5): 500 ms - 1 s - 2 s - 4 s - 8 s
 Types of IP mode available (cf. II.1.5): Arithmetic – Semi logarithmic – Logarithmic - Cole-
Cole - Programmable

For a given current injection time and IP mode, the program will choose automatically the IP
parameters (Mdly, Vdly, TMi) that will be used for the measurement.

74
Note:
The programmable mode is a mode where 20 fully programmable windows are available. The operator
has to select the delay time (Mdly) with a minimum of 20 ms and the width of each partial window
(TMi) with a minimum of 10 ms. Vdly is automatically determined by the injection time chosen.
In the following tables, the preset TMi values are given for each IP mode (1 means TM1):

About the IP values type, note that the changing ″raw (R) ⇔ normalised (N)″ can be realized after the
acquisition.
The normalization allows to homogenize the data that have been obtained with various injection and
integration times. This is made with respect to a standard decay curve, which is the one obtained with
the following parameters:
Mode: Logarithmic
Injection time: 2000 ms
Vdly: 1260 ms
Mdly: 160 ms
TM1: 120 ms
TM2: 220 ms
TM3: 420 ms
TM4: 820 ms
