3. A cylindrical tin has a height of 20 cm and the diameter of its base is 12 cm. The tin contains
2 liters of paint. If the can is opened, how far below the lid would you expect the level of the
paint to be? Give your answer to the nearest millimeter. [4]

3
4. A rectangle is 1 cm longer than it is wide and its area is 12 cm 2. Find the dimensions of the
rectangle. [4]

5. Draw a straight line graph with the gradient of -1 and the y-intercept of 3. [4]

4

6. An athlete runs 6 miles at 8 mph, then walks 1 mile at 4 mph. Find his average speed for the
whole journey. [5]

7. Rotate the triangle 90° anticlockwise about the point (0,0). Draw the triangle in its new
position. [2]

6
8. The perimeter of an isosceles triangle is 170 cm. The longest side is 20 cm more than each of
the two short sides which are equal. If the length of each short side is x cm and the length of
the longest side is y cm, form two equations in x and y and solve them simultaneously to find
the lengths of the three sides. [6]

7
9. A biologist wanted to investigate how pollution levels affect the growth of fish in a dam. In
January, she caught a number of fish and measured their length before releasing them back
into the water.

(a) Draw a stem and leaf diagram that shows the lengths of the fish to the nearest centimeter.
(b) How many fish did she measure?

(c) What was the shortest length measured?

(d) How long was the longest fish measured?

(e) How many fish were 40 cm or longer? [6]

8
10. (a) Find the equation of the line parallel to the given line that passes through the given point.
𝑦 = 1 − 4𝑥 (0, -1)
(b) Find the equation of the line perpendicular to the given line that passes through the given
point.
𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 1 (0, 2) [2]

9
11. The displacement (D cm3) of an engine is given by the formula
𝑏
𝐷 = 𝜋𝑛 × (2)2 × 𝑠

where n is the number of cylinders, b is the bore (diameter) of each cylinder in centimeters
and s is the length of the stroke in centimeters.
Find the displacement of a 3-cylider petrol engine that has a bore of 68 mm and a stroke of
74 mm. [3]

12. Eight bricklayers can build a certain wall in 10 days. How long would it take five bricklayers to
build it? [2]

(b) 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, …
(c) 1 × 3, 2 × 4, 3 × 5, … [4]

11
12
15. Solve the following simultaneous equations graphically, either by plotting the points on graph
paper. In either case, use values for x and y in the ranges given.
3𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 11
5𝑥 − 2𝑦 = 10 [6]

13

16. The length of a car is given as 455 cm. If this is correct to the nearest 5 cm, find the range in
which the actual length lies. [1]
