ISI 51.30.00002 - Awareness on Consumable Material List (CML)

ISI 51.30.00001 - How to find a PQ material reference in AIRBUS documentation (SM, CML, PMS)

Background:

Operators are regularly asking for CML product alternatives such as sealant, adhesives, ….
This article intends to give some information on such requests.

Description:

CML product alternative is a recurring question like for example :

Sealants have same Standard or Specification, but different Drawing Designation, can they be substituted ?
Sealants have same Drawing Designation, but different Standard or Specification, can they be substituted ?

Solution / Recommendation:
Questions might be classified in 2 main groups and recommendation will be given on these 2 :

1. Need for alternative for a CML Application code defined in maintenance documentation : AMM, SRM, SB Task.

2. Need for alternative for a product defined in Aircraft definition drawing like for example during a part replacement in case of
damage, corrosion, …

Case 1 : In case of alternative for a CML Application code

Maintenance Manuals are now referring more and more CML Application code to give flexibility to operators for products selection.

As detailed in ISI 51.30.00002, Categories have been defined and described in CML Introduction for understandable alternative
management.
Some products might be in several CML Application Code and it may cause trouble to select an alternative.

In case of alternative need starting from a defined CML Application code , category A/B/C rules have to be followed .

On a case by case basis, Airbus can be consulted to allow using product from another CML Application code, this service might
be chargeable. In such case please mention carefully specific task on which alternative is requested.

For preliminary investigation for an alternative, operators shall focus on similar category rather than searching alternative to a
product on a different CML Application.

Ex : MC-238 Class B 1 MC-110 Promoter is defined in CML Application Code 06ABF1 Polysulfide Sealant / Fuel Tank Quick Curing
and also 06AAB1 Polysulfide Sealant / General Purpose Fillet.
It does not mean selecting an acceptable alternative of MC-238 in 06AAB1 Application code will be acceptable for fuel tank sealing
repair as per SRM 51-76-12.

Case 2 : In case of alternative for a product in Aircraft definition drawing

As a reminder, please note that all consumables used in Aircraft production and which can be found in drawings, are listed
in TN (Technical Notes) provided through PMS (Process and Material Specifications), with no systematic alternative
management.

Some of them can be found in CML but not all of them.

In a few cases, products are listed in drawing but no longer used : TN can propose an alternative solution.

How to find an alternative ?

1 - Technical Note for product as per drawing has to be retrieved. See ISI 51.30.00001 for support on that point.

2 - Then information provided in Technical Note has to be carefully read to find acceptable product / alternative.

Some tips :
o Products with same Column “Ref” can be considered alternative.
o Column “Interchangeable Products” can be of support also to find alternative.
o Column “Comments” is useful as well mentioning some potential replacement product due to obsolescence.
o Column “Standard or Specification” can be used to retrieve product in CML.

Ex : PQ10010-020-00 can be found in TN A007 10010 dedicated on sealants (PMS with cross reference 02-04-00).
This PQ reference lists 2 products designation : MC780 Class C and PR1782 Class C can be considered alternative, which is
consistent with 06AAC1 CML application Code where these 2 products can be found alternative each other.

In case of need, alternative can be granted with further investigation, considering that alternative have to respect the
capability of replaced product to ensure the same performance for specific applications as per drawing, this service might be
chargeable.
