SCOPE OF THIS MANUAL

This Maintenance Manual (MM) gives the data that is

needed to do the maintenance and repair of model
412 helicopters S/N 33001 through 33213 and S/N
36001 and subsequent. The MM should be used in
conjunction with two other Model 412 helicopter
publications: the Illustrated Parts Breakdown manual
(BHT-412-IPB) and the Component Repair and
Overhaul manual (BHT-412-CR&O).
This MM is backed by other Bell Helicopter
publications. These other publications are also used
on other helicopter models. These other publications
are: the Special Tools Illustrated Parts Breakdown
(BHT-SPECTOOL-IPB), the Standard Practices
Manual (BHT-ALL-SPM), the Electrical Standard
Practices Manual (BHT-ELEC-SPM), the Structural
Repair Manual (BHT-MED-SRM), and the Corrosion
Control Guide (CSSD-PSE-87-001).

use information contained within this
manual applicable to S/N 33108 through
33213 and S/N 36001 through 36019.
Generally, information applicable to S/N
36020 through S/N 36086 applies to S/N
34025 and subsequent. For specific
differences in S/N 34025 and subsequent,
for instruments, electrical and avionics,
refer to NB-412-MM basic maintenance
manual. Copies of this manual may be

(ASBs) are published when they are necessary. These
documents supplement the Maintenance Manual and
give instructions and data to change components,
systems, and maintenance practices on the helicopter.
When a bulletin affects the way the helicopter is
maintained, it is incorporated in the manual at the next
available opportunity. Refer to the Bulletin Record

in
accordance
with
manufacturers
instructions unless otherwise specified in
this manual.
The consumable materials that are necessary for you
to do maintenance tasks are given by name and by
item number in the text: for example, solvent
(C-304). The number refers to the item 304. The data
on this item 304 is found in Table 13-2 in Chapter 13 of
Standard Practices Manual (BHT-ALL-SPM).
On occasion, the materials that are used in
maintenance tasks will change properties, change
suppliers, or be discontinued. Also, new improved
materials become available. If there is ever a
difference between the Maintenance Manual and
Standard Practices Manual, the manual that has the
latest date of issue shows the preferred material.
However, either material may be used for the
maintenance task unless it is stated otherwise in the
procedure.

1-12.

SPECIAL TOOLS

Some maintenance procedures require the use of

special tools. These tools are given in a table at the
beginning of the applicable maintenance paragraph. A
description and illustration of these tools are found in
the Special Tools Illustrated Parts Breakdown Manual
(BHT-SPECTOOL-IPB).

1-13.

TORQUES

Where applicable, special torques are specified within

the text (or on illustrations) within this manual.
When a torque value is not shown, then the standard
torque value for that combination of fasteners shall be
used. Standard torque values for various combinations
of fasteners are found in the Standard Practices
Manual (BHT-ALL-SPM).

WARNINGS, CAUTIONS AND NOTES

WARNING

IF YOU DO NOT FOLLOW THE

INSTRUCTIONS THAT ARE GIVEN IN A
WARNING, PERSONAL INJURY CAN
OCCUR.

CAUTION
IF YOU DO NOT FOLLOW THE
INSTRUCTIONS THAT ARE GIVEN IN A
CAUTION, YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE
TO THE HELICOPTER OR TO THE
COMPONENTS.

NOTE
A note includes supplemental data about
the procedure, the practice, the condition,
etc. for the maintenance task that you do.
1. Warnings, cautions and notes are used
throughout this manual to emphasize important and
critical instructions.

1-17.

STANDARD PRACTICES

Standard maintenance practices and procedures that

are not given in this manual are found in the Standard
Practices Manual (BHT-ALL-SPM) and the Electrical
Standard Practices Manual (BHT-ELEC-SPM).

COMMONLY USED SYMBOLS

1-18.

Some illustrations have symbols to highlight common

processes such as the application of sealant, primer,
corrosion preventive compound. Other processes are
the use of heat, assembly fluid, or unreduced wet
primer. Figure 1-1 shows some of the symbols used.
Always use the consumable material (C-XXX) which is
called out (paragraph 1-11).

REPLACEMENT PARTS AND

ASSEMBLIES

Replacement parts and assemblies that are necessary

for the correct and proper maintenance of the
helicopter and its components are given in the
Illustrated Parts Breakdown Manual (BHT-412-IPB).

1. Throughout this manual, wear limits are given to
show the required fit between the mating parts. It is not
intended that all dimensions be examined as a
prescribed maintenance procedure. However, you
must examine the dimensions of parts that show signs
of wear or physical damage.

HELICOPTER DESCRIPTION

The Model 412 SERIES Helicopter (Figure 1-2)

consists of two major assemblies: The forward

fuselage and the tailboom. The forward fuselage is of

semimonocoque and reinforced shell construction with
transverse bulkheads and metal and fiberglass
covering. Two longitudinal main beams provide the
primary structural support.
A hinged door on either side of the forward area
permits direct access to the crew area and a large
sliding door permits access to the cargo/passenger
area. Additionally, a hinged cargo door is located
immediately ahead of the sliding door. This door
increases the width of access to the cargo/passenger
area. Seating is provided for the pilot and forward
passenger/copilot in the crew area (cockpit) and up to
13 passengers in the cargo/passenger (cabin) area.
The engine deck, located above and aft of the
passenger/cargo area, is designed to accommodate
the engines, reduction (combining) gearbox, firewalls,
and air management system.
The tailboom is of semimonocoque construction which
provides support for a vertical fin, aerodynamically
actuated elevator, tail rotor and tail rotor drive system,
tail skid, and baggage compartment.
The powerplant is a Pratt and Whitney of Canada, Ltd.
PT6T-3 series twin turboshaft (Twin-Pac) engine
consisting of two identical free turbine power sections.
A common reduction (combining) gearbox mounted
across the aft end of the power sections has an
engine-to-transmission output shaft (main driveshaft)
extending forward along the centerline of the engine to
provide power to the transmission.
The main rotor system is a soft-in-plane, flex-beam
type with four interchangeable blades. For storage and
handling, two of the blades may be folded back along
the fuselage. When folded, the blades do not extend
beyond the width of the fuselage.
