Psychological Safety: Case Study of an

Organisational approach to Mental Health

Naomi Armitage (Humanology Group) & Bobbie Foot (BMA)
October 2020
Out of adversity comes opportunity… (Benjamin Franklin)

When COVID 19 hit, BMA had:

Ø Diversity and Inclusion programs underway for ~5 years
Ø Ongoing health and safety programs, including recent interventions in line with industry reset in 2019
Ø Leader learning and development programs such as Step up to Leadership in place for ~6 years
Ø Mental Health Framework in place ~4 years, including:
Ø Resilience program being delivered
Ø Peer support programs deployed at some sites
Ø Mental health toolkits, communications and leader training, awareness campaigns
Ø A refreshed BMA 5 year Culture plan, including plans to commence psychological safety training with General Managers

COVID 19 brought extra challenges for our leaders, our people and our communities and we knew all the
supports we had in place may not be enough

Developed an additional Multi-pronged support strategy for mental health

Foundational to this was Psychological Safety, to not only tackle mental health, but also support:
Ø Diversity and Inclusion
Ø Safety improvements
Ø Learning and development
Ø Business Performance and productivity
Ø Innovation
Ø Culture
