Life Cycle Assessment of Carbon Fiber

Phone Case

Material Selection- Carbon Fiber is a composite, thus making it not recyclable. It is expensive too. Yet it is chosen to
make phone cases because of its durability, lightweight, impact resistance and its resistance to water and heat.

Manufacturing- These phone cases are made by infusing epoxy resin and carbon fibers in a compression mold.
The epoxy resin has toxic chemicals which are harmful. The process is energy intensive and has a high scrap rate.

Transportation- The phone cases can be easily transported since they are stackable. Also, carbon fiber being
lightweight is a plus point.

Life Time Use- Carbon Fiber has high stiffness and is durable. It can withstand regular day wear and tear.

Longevity- Carbon Fiber phone cases last longer than plastic cases. It can last upto 10 years, depending on the use.

End of Life- Carbon Fiber is not recyclable. Thus it mostly ends up in landfills.
Life Cycle Assessment of Cork Phone Case

Material Selection- Cork is a natural material and can be recycled.

Manufacturing- Cork phone cases are made from harvested cork. The cork is processed into thin sheets then
laminated with a base material which is biodegradable. THe manufacturing is low energy intensive.

Transportation- Cork cases is lightweight and durable.

Life Time Use- Cork is durable, but not as durable as carbon fiber. It can damage due to very rough handling.

Longevity- The longevity of cork cases is less than carbon fiber.

End of Life- Cork is biodegradable and can be easily recycled. Recycling cork is also environment-friendly.
