<P> When the British left Manipur in 1947, the rule of Manipur fell on the
shoulders of Maharaja Bodhchandra . After the merger treaty signed on 21 September
1949, Manipur became a part of India from 15 October 1949. It joined the Indian
Union as a Part 'C' state under a Chief Commissioner when the Indian Constitution
came into force on 26 January 1950 . Later, in its place a Regional Council was
formed which had 30 elected and two nominated members.</p>
<P> After this, in 1962, under the Union Territories Act, an assembly of 30 elected
and three nominated members was established. With effect from December 19, 1969,
the status of the administrator was increased from Chief Commissioner to Lieutenant
Governor. On January 21, 1972, Manipur gained full statehood and an assembly
consisting of 60 elected members was constituted. Of these, 19 are reserved for
Scheduled Tribes and 1 for Scheduled Castes. The state has two representatives in
the Lok Sabha and one in the RajyaSabha.</p>

<h1> <b> IMPORTANCE OF MANIPUR </b> </h1>
<p> Located on the eastern border of India, this state falls between 23.83 degrees
north and 25.68 degrees north latitude and 94.78 degrees east longitude. On one
side, there is Myanmar in the east and Nagaland in the north-west.The geographical
location of Manipur is worth seeing. There are high hills in the northern and
eastern areas and plain plains in the central part. Here some river flows in the
middle of every mountain. Imphal River is the main river here.</P>
<P> Agriculture and agro-based industries are the basis of the economy. The state
is a suitable location for information technology based businesses. There is a
system of higher education here, there are immense opportunities for investment,
especially in the field of agriculture and food processing. There are many
possibilities in the field of handloom, handicraft and tourism. To attract
investors in these areas, the government has prepared many policies and has also
announced many incentives to attract investors.</p>
<p>Due to its diverse flora and fauna, Manipur is called by various names like
'Jewel of India' and 'Switzerland of the East' etc. The captivating natural scenery
includes exotic flowers and plants, serene forests, flowing rivers and lush
greenery on the hills. Apart from all this there are many attractions for tourists
which provides excellent opportunities for the development of tourism in the state.
Shri Govind Ji Temple, Kharim Band Bazaar (Ima Kaithal) War Graveyard, Shaheed
Minar, Nupi San (Women's War) Memorial Komlar Xa, Khonghapat Garden, INA Memorial
(Moirang), Loktak Lake, Kibul Lamjo National Park, Vishnu Temple at Vishnupur ,
Sendra, Moreh Sirai Village, Sirai Hills, Duko Valley, Government Museum, Kaina
Tourist Residence, Khongjom War Memorial etc. are some of the important tourist
places of Manipur. Manipur is located in the far north-eastern tip of the country
and is mostly covered with hills. There are many investment opportunities here.
There are many areas here where there is a lot of potential to attract investors.
Imphal and Ukhrul are famous among the tourist places here. In Imphal, Kangla Park,
Govind Mandir, the markets there, Tikendrajit Park are famous and the hills of
Ukhrul are famous. Loktak Lake is famous in Chuda Chandpur district.
Foreigners entering Manipur, even if born here, are required to obtain a Restricted
Area Permit. It is available from the Regional Registration Offices of Foreigners
located in the four main metros. This permit is valid only for ten days, and
tourists can visit here only in groups of four people arranged by authorized travel
agents. Also, foreign tourists can come here only by air and they are not allowed
to roam outside the capital Imphal.</p>

<h2> Handicrafts </h2>
<p>The handicraft industry of the state has a unique place among the various
handicraft arts of the country. This includes products made of cane and bamboo as
well as the culture of making pottery. The practice of making pottery in Manipur is
very old and this enterprise is mainly carried out in Andro, Sikmai, Charan,
Thogjao, Nungwi and Senapati districts. Since bamboo and cane are available in
large quantities, basket weaving has become a popular occupation among the people
here. Apart from this, fishing equipment is also made from cane and bamboo. All
these products are in great demand in domestic as well as international
markets.</p>
