Functionalist Perspective On Education:

Functionalists focus on the positive functions of education:

1: Creating social solitary
2: Teaching core values
3: Work skills
4: Role allocation meritocracy
• Education Creates Social Solidarity

We have social solidarity when we feel as if we are part of something bigger. Emile Durkheim argued
that school makes us feel like we are a part of something bigger. This is done through the learning of
subjects such as History and English which give us a shared sense of identity. Also in American
schools, children pledge allegiance to the flag.

Durkheim argued that ‘school is a society in miniature.’ preparing us for life in wider society. For
example, both in school and at work we have to cooperate with people who are neither friends or
family-which gets us ready for dealing with people at work in later life.
• Education teaches pupils core values:
Talcott Parsons argued that education acts as the ‘focal socializing agency’ in modern society. School
plays the central role in the process of secondary socialization, taking over from primary
socialization. He argued this was necessary because the family and the wider society work in different
principles and children need to adapt if there are in to cope in the wider world.

Positive evaluations of the Functionalist view on Education: School performs positive

functions for most pupils most of the time-even though students might not want to go to school
sometimes and not necessarily enjoy school some of the time, the majority come out after 13.
Conflict Perspective on Education
• Education is a vehicle for reproducing existing class relationships.
• Unequal funding is a source of inequality in education.
• Access to colleges and universities is determined not only by academic record but also by the
ability to pay.

Conflict Perspective say about Education?

The Educational system reinforces and perpetuates social inequalities that arise from different in
Access and ethnicity.
By Karl Marx: Conflict theory states that tensions and conflict arise when Access power are unevenly
distributed between groups in society and that these conflict become the engine for social change.
Interactionism Perspective on Education:
The main focus of an interactionist perspective is the interactions of society. For example: low
standardized test scores or poor performance in a particular class often lead to a student who is
labeled as a low achiever.
One more example:
When a child and an adult engage in conversation, the adult establishes their power by claiming
knowledge and authority that the child cannot.
It focus on the interactions between pupils and between pupils and teachers, looking at concepts such
as labelling at the processes and relationships that happen within schools.
