Bulletin #D5 - English

Maintenance of the Exhaust Valve Seat "O" Ring

Applicable engine models: DL-16, DL-19, DL-20, DL-22, DL-24, DK-16
Sa91-09

The following notes are applicable only for the

above specified engine models fitted / equipped
with exhaust valve seat or a seat ring of a cooled
cylinder head.

Care should be taken when removing and

installing the exhaust valve seat "O" ring, for it is
used as a sealing material between valve seat
and cylinder head (figure 1).

A damaged "O" ring will lead to water leakage

from the cooling water jacket into the
combustion cylinder.

Material

The "O" ring is made of heat resistant fluorine

equal to JIS B2401 4-D which has a working
temperature range between -15 C and 220 C.

The use of a gas torch to remove carbon deposits

Figure 1 from the combustion surface of the cylinder head
is NOT recommended.

At higher temperatures than those in an actual

combustion cycle, the "O" ring will harden and
crack like rubber and which in turn will lead to
water leakage.

Any cylinder head that has been heated by a gas

torch should examined for good fit at the valve
seat and the "O" ring of the valve seat replaced
Detail 1
as soon as possible.

Replacement of the "O" ring

The useful life of an exhaust valve seat "O" ring is approximately 2 years or 10,000 to
12,000 hours of operation. However, the "O" ring should be replaced with a new one
whenever overhauling of the exhaust valve takes place.

Note : The same type of "O" ring is being used in the nozzle holder guide. The same
principles of operation and maintenance apply for this "O" ring.
