Induction Motors

6-1 A 3φ, 460 V, 100 hp, 60 Hz, four-pole induction machine delivers rated output power at a
fractional slip of 0.05. Determine the
(a) Synchronous speed and rotor mechanical speed in revolution/minute (i.e. rpm).
(b) Frequency of the rotor circuit (i.e. frequency of rotor voltage and current) in Hz.
(Note: Generally, rotor has the same number of Pole Pairs as the stator)
c) Slip speed in rpm.

6-2 A 4-pole, 60 Hz induction motor runs with a fractional slip of s=4%. Find
(a) the rotor circuit frequency (i.e. frequency of rotor voltage and current) in Hz;
(b) the speed difference between stator magnetic field speed and rotor mechanical speed
in revolution/minute (i.e. rpm);
(c) What happens if the stator magnetic field rotational speed becomes equal to its rotor
mechanical speed in an induction machine?
(d) Why induction machine is also called 'asynchronous' machine?
Induction Motors

6-3 A 3φ, 15 hp (horse power), 460 V, four-pole, 60 Hz, 1728 rpm induction motor delivers full
output power to a load connected to its shaft. The windage and friction loss of the motor is 750 W.
Determine the

Note: 1 horse power = 746W

(a) Rated total mechanical power output in the unit of W.

(b) Rated air gap power.

(c) Rated rotor copper loss.
