1. A 440 V, 3-phase, 50 Hz, 6-pole, 945 rpm, delta connected induction motor has
following parameters referred to the stator:
Rs = 2.0 Ω, Rr’ = 2.0 Ω, Xs = 3 Ω, Xr’= 4 Ω
When driving a fan load at rated voltage it runs at rated speed. The motor speed is
controlled by stator voltage control. Determine
i) Motor terminal voltage, current and torque at 800 rpm
ii) Motor speed, current and torque for the terminal voltage of 280 V.
2. Repeat Problem 1 for a load whose torque varies linearly with speed.
3. A 2.8 kW, 400 V, 50 Hz, 4-pole, 1370 rpm, Y-connected induction motor has the
following parameters:
Rs = 1.9 Ω, Rr’ = 4.757 Ω, Xs = Xr’ = 3 Ω
Load characteristics are matched with motor such that the motor runs at 1370 rpm with
full voltage across its terminals. The motor is controlled by terminal voltage control and
load torque is proportional to speed. Calculate the motor terminal voltage and current at
half the rated speed. Can the motor be allowed to run continuously at this speed?
4. A three phase, 440V, 50 Hz, 4 pole star connected slip ring induction motor has the
following parameters referred to stator: Rs = 0.5 Ω, Rr’ = 0.4 Ω, Xs= Xr’= 1.2 Ω. Stator to
rotor turns ratio is 3.5. The motor is controlled by injecting an external voltage in the
rotor circuit. Calculate the motor current and torque for a speed of 1200 r.p.m., when an
external voltage of 15V at the same phase as the stator voltage is injected in the rotor.
Ignore the no load current.
5. A 3-phase, 50Hz, 415V, 6-pole slip-ring induction motor is controlled by slip power
recovery scheme. Open circuit voltage between slip rings is 600V at stand-still. Inverter
is directly connected to stator terminals. Calculate the firing delay angle of the inverter
for a speed of 800 r.p.m.
6. A 440 V, 50 Hz, 6 pole, Y-connected squirrel-cage induction motor has the following
parameters:
Rs = 0.6 Ω, Rr’ = 0.3 Ω, Xs= Xr’= 1 Ω
The normal full load slip is 0.05.
The motor is fed from a voltage source inverter, which maintains a constant V/f ratio. For
an operating frequency of 10 Hz, calculate the breakdown torque as a ratio of its value at
the rated frequency. What should be V/f ratio at 10 Hz so that the breakdown torque at
this frequency remains the same as at rated frequency?
7. In the drive of Problem 6, the inverter frequency range is from 60 to 5 Hz. Calculate the
starting torque and current of this drive as a ratio of their values when the motor is started
at the rated voltage and frequency.
8. A 3-phase, delta-connected, 6 pole, 50 Hz, 400 V, 925 rpm, squirrel-cage induction
motor has the following parameters:
Rs = 0.2 Ω, Rr’ = 0.3 Ω, Xs = 0.5 Ω, Xr’ = 1 Ω
The motor is fed from a voltage source inverter with a constant V/f ratio from 0 to 50 Hz
and constant voltage of 400 V above 50 Hz frequency.
i) Determine the breakdown torque for a frequency of 100 Hz as a ratio of its value at
50 Hz.
ii) Also obtain the torque at the rated motor current and 75 Hz as the ratio of rated full-
load torque of the motor.
iii) Calculate the motor torque at 30 Hz and a slip-speed of 60 rpm.
9. Calculate the following for inverter-fed induction motor drive of Problem 8.
i) Speed for the frequency of 35 Hz and half of full-load torque.
ii) Frequency and motor current for a speed of 600 rpm and 80% of full-load torque.
iii) Torque for a frequency of 35 Hz and speed of 650 rpm.
Assume motor speed-torque curve to be parallel straight lines in the region of interest.
10. A 400V, 50 Hz, 980 r.p.m. Star connected squirrel cage induction motor has following
equivalent circuit parameters referred to stator.
Rs = 0.29 Ω, Rr’ = 0.145 Ω, Xs = 0.21 Ω, Xr’ = 0.5 Ω, Xm = 13.3 Ω
Motor is supplied from a Current Source Inverter. The flux is maintained constant at the
rated value. Calculate:
(i) the stator current and dc link current when the machine operates at rated torque and 50
Hz.
(ii) the inverter frequency and dc link current for a speed of 600 r.p.m. and rated torque.
(iii) the motor speed and stator current for half of the rated torque and inverter frequency
of 30 Hz. Assume speed-torque characteristics to be linear in the stable region.

The motor is fed from a voltage source inverter. The drive is operated with a constant
(V/f) control up to 50 Hz and at rated voltage above 50 Hz.
