Drawing Exercise 1
tonal chart
I was slightly confident with my
shading skills with graphite until the
reality of how delicate you have to be
with even how you hold your pencil,
hit me like a truck.

I also learned that smudging with your

finger vs a blending stump was
significantly different in how much
pigment is scattered across the
paper.

I now have a more flexible arsenal

when deciding to shade with graphite!

From learning the tonal values and
how to execute them, I did this really
quickly as this assignment was being
given.

Could work on my cleanliness and

preciseness though.. this looks like
my usual rough style, I have a long
way to go to achieve realism if I
wanted to.

ballpoints
I had lots of fun exploring ballpoint
pens again, it was my childhood to
play with multicolored pens when I
was bored.

It irritated me though when the pen

started blotting. I should definitely
dab the pen on tissue more often.
Cross-hatching was a big player in
these pieces. Again, it’s rougher
than I wanted it to be, another
struggle with delicate pen handling.

charcoal pencil
drawing
This was my first time using
charcoal pencils. I had a hard time
grasping the soft / hardness of the
pencils. I was really used to
linework in comics since I grew up
making webtoons.

I’m slightly getting the hang of

getting rid of my chicken scratch
strokes- which I’m glad about.

I love using colored pencils.

I’m really happy with how I achieved

less linework / comic line style-
though I did it accidentally on the
bird’s toes.

Burnishing was really satisfying to do.

The white colored pencil saved my
life!

soft pastel

Not my proudest moment..
This was my first time using soft
pastels.

I really disliked how messy it was to

work with, and I had no idea how to
wrap the colors to avoid damaging
the colored pencil drawing. Not to
mention, I didn’t know where to
start!

I did learn to use lighter colors more

and darker slightly last and how the
background should be done before
the foreground in the end.

oil pastel
portraiture
Another messy encounter!
Oil pastels have been
familiar to me since I did
poster making contests
back in elementary school.

This is the first time I

focused on this medium with
background knowledge
though. It was especially
hard for me to draw the
facial features or the small
details since the pastel had
a bigger end than I would
like. Maybe adding oil to it
would make this piece
smoother?

I found a way on how to get better at
refining the details using oil pastels.
Apparently spreading oil with crushed
oil pastels helped a lot with how I
made this piece, especially with
making that 3D effect on the flowers.

Soft pastels are still a pain, but I did

use it on the background and some to
darken or better some colors in

elements or figures within
the piece. I do wish I could’ve done
more with the background. I do think
it’s lacking.
