Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, also known as Mother Teresa, was born on the 26th of August 1910 in
Skopje (North Macedonia) to Albanian parents, passed away on the 5th of September 1997 in
Kolkata (India). As she was growing up in Skopje, around the age of 12 she started to sense a
great call from the Lord, and there she knew, that she had to become one of the loyal
messengers sent by the Lord to preach and spread the love of Christ our savior all over the
world. When she turned 18, she left for Ireland to join The Sisters of Loreto, a community of
nuns whose missions are set in India. After training in Dublin for a few months, she then was
sent to India where she took her initial vows on May 24, 1931 and from then until the year 1948
she was teaching at the St. Mary’s High School in Kolkata. There she had seen how poverty
affected the people living there, she was disheartened of how much the people were suffering
that on the same year, she was given permission to leave the convent school to devote her life
to work and help the poorest of the poor as best as she could, even if she had no funding what
so ever, she placed her faith the Lord no matter what, and opened an open-air school for the
children in the slums of Kolkata. As time passed by, volunteers started to join her to help her
with her cause and to financially support her. She was able to branch out and on October 7,
1950, she received permission from the Holy See to start her own order, “The Missionaries of
Charity” whose main goal was to care for the people who weren’t given the chance to live a full
happy life. The society then started to expand and branch out to countries like Africa, Asia, Latin
America and even in Eastern European countries and the former Soviet Union. Over 40 countries
were aided by Mother Teresa’s group, and from then on she was known as the living saint.

2. She went through a lot to be able to help others around her, she had to leave her home and
family behind when she started to help the poor and underprivileged in Kolkata, but she herself
was also struggling to take care of herself, even begging for food and supplies to keep herself
alive, she also struggled with her faith in the Lord around this time. But instead of becoming
bitter and selfish, she kept on going, and never stopped helping those in need. She had
compassion to those who weren’t so fortunate, because she experienced what it was like to be
in their shoes.
