The encomienda is a labor system that was used by the Spanish crown
during the colonization of the Americas and the Philippines. In the
encomienda, the crown granted a person a number of natives who were
their "responsibility". In exchange, the colonizer had to protect the
natives from other tribes and to teach them the Spanish language and
the Catholic faith. In return, they received tribute from the natives-
labor, gold or other products, such as corn, wheat or chickens.
History
The word encomienda means "to entrust." The encomienda was based on
the Spanish Reconquista institution in which adelantados (nobles and
knights) had the right to extract tribute from Muslims or other
peasants (poor farmers) in areas that they had conquered. The colonial
system was different from the peninsular version in that encomenderos
did not own the land. All land belonged to the monarch of the Crown of
Castille. The system was formally abolished in 1720. In many areas it
was abandoned for other forms of labor, such as slavery and haciendas.
In certain areas, this feudal system persisted, for example in Mexico,
where it existed until the 19th century.
Encomenderos
The phrase "sin indios no hay Indias" (without Indians, there are no
Indies - i.e. America) emphasizes the economic importance of native
labor. In 1503 the crown began to legally grant encomiendas to
soldiers, conquistadors and officials. The system of encomiendas was
helped when the Crown organized the population into small towns known
as reducciones. Each reducción had a Native chief responsible for
organizing the native workers in his community.
After main revolts from native peoples who were defending their rights
to equality, the encomienda system legally ended in 1720, when the
crown ended the institution. The system changed into the hacienda
system, or large estates, in which workers were directly employed by
the hacienda owners. As the number of natives declined and mining
activities were replaced by agricultural activities in the seventeenth
century, land ownership became more profitable than the acquisition of
labor forces. However, many of the atrocities committed towards
natives under the encomienda system continued, unfortunately.
