Additional questions

A letter of motivation should answer to these questions: why are you applying to the Master's Degree programme in Media
Education, what is your academic and personal goal, what are your expectations and challenges regarding the studies, how
your earlier studies support your Media Education studies, what kind of research projects interest you, and what kind of
effect will these studies have to your future career choices? In addition, the motivation letter can also describe the
applicant's hobbies, organisational activities, work experience and previous long-term periods abroad. Motivation letter is
written in English and it should be no longer than 10 000 characters in length.

Please note that you do not need to send a separate motivation letter to any of the faculties – the motivation letter you have
written in your UAF application is sufficient.

Allow me to begin with the honest confession that I did not academically study media
education in my bachelor’s programme. However, I strongly believe the experience and skills
that I have acquired by working in journalism for nearly three years make me a suitable
candidate for the master's programme in media education at the University of Lapland.

Having graduated with a degree in electronics and telecommunication engineering from

Southeast University, one of the prominent private universities in Dhaka, in 2012, I began
working at an online newspaper as a sub-editor in February 2013 because of my keen
interest in writing. There I gained practical knowledge of how the media works and the
massive role it plays in the lives of people of different communities in the society.

At work, I was fortunate enough to learn from a senior journalist who worked for the BBC
Bengali service in Dhaka for several years. I learned how to write reports on different
subjects, especially politics, crime, science and daily events. I was taught how to put together
different segments of a report to construct a complete and coherent story, how to substantiate
claims, how to verify the authenticity of sources, how to contextualise reports by finding and
adding relevant background information, and how to come up with different angles for a
single report to make it more compelling. I also learned how to effectively interview people
and how to cover seminars/roundtable discussions.

I did not struggle much to grasp what it takes to work as a journalist, largely because I had
been good at writing since my teenage years, and also because I had studied mathematics,
higher mathematics, physics, computer studies and other subjects of science discipline since
my school days. These subjects taught me how to make reasoned arguments, and how to
use formulas and evidence to draw logical conclusions.

Apart from writing news reports, I also began writing bylined articles, which not only helped
me broaden my knowledge of a variety of subjects but also gave me the opportunity to create
an identity of my own as a journalist. So far, I have written more than 20 bylined articles in
English and Bengali, and 12 of those have been published in the Dhaka Tribune, a national
English daily where I currently work at as a sub-editor. My articles published in the Dhaka
Tribune can be found here: www.dhakatribune.com/author/mahmudul-islam

What we read in newspapers or see on TV has a profound impact on how our thoughts are
shaped and how we form opinions on different issues that concern our daily lives at the
personal, social and national level. My love for journalism grew every day as I had this feeling
that I have the opportunity to touch people’s lives through my work.

I presently work at two media organisations. My morning job is at Thereport24.com, a

bilingual online newspaper where I have been working as a sub-editor for the English version
since December 2013 after leaving my first job in November that year. Here my primary role
is to translate Bengali reports into English.

Also, in the evening, I work in the central news desk at the Dhaka Tribune, where I have been

employed since March 2014. At the Dhaka Tribune, I have to write or edit reports on politics
and other daily events that happen across Bangladesh.

Working at the same time in both the print and online media has provided me with extensive
practical knowledge of journalism, but I am applying to this master’s programme as I strongly
believe that an academic degree can give me the theoretical knowledge of this field that I
evidently lack. In this regard, I will be happy to complete complementary bridging studies of
25 ECTS that the programme offers for students who do not have enough previous studies in
media education.

In the future, I plan to work in the field of education as a journalist or writer as education is
what I am very passionate about. To give you an idea of how I am working towards my plan, I
have sent one of my published articles titled “The Finnish lesson” along with the application
documents. In the article, I have focused on how equity helped Finland transform its
education system and what Bangladesh can learn from this Nordic nation.

Moreover, the book “Finnish Lessons” by Finnish education expert Dr Pasi Sahlberg had a
profound impact on how I have thought about education for long. The book opened my eyes
to the wonderful concept of equity, which I found to be a very powerful feature that can
significantly alter an education system and produce surprising results. This is a key reason
why I want to pursue my master’s degree in Finland, as I have a keen interest in getting a first
-hand experience of how an equity-oriented education system impacts learning.

I understand that the master’s programme offers studies in the role of media in teaching and
learning. This is what particularly caught my attention when I went through the media
education programme structure on the university website. I believe the wider use of media
and technology will greatly influence the way students will learn in the future.

Dr Sahlberg has also written in his book that people in the future will give more attention to
media and communication technologies than they do today, and this will mean that people
will learn more about the world and other people through media and communication
technologies. I think the developed world is already seeing it happening to a large extent and
the developing countries will also catch up sooner or later.

I am interested in research projects that explore ways in which the media, coupled with the
information and communication technologies (ICT), can be optimised in a variety of learning
environments in order to facilitate learning and thereby boosting student performance.
Incorporating tools involving the utilisation of media and the ICT into teaching in addition to
the traditional model of delivering lectures can do wonders for students in terms of learning,
and I want to do my master’s research into this area.

The media education programme is thus completely consistent with my interest in the field
and my future plan. I am fully convinced that the two-year course will help me develop
adequate skills, especially in the areas of critical thinking and writing in-depth analyses, to
become a successful professional in the field of journalism. As an education journalist, I want
to write books on education, how education can be improved in a global context, and what
different countries can learn from the top-performing nations. I also want to publish scholarly
articles on education in reputed journals.

Moreover, during my master's programme, I have plans to write a book on the Finnish
education system, detailing the significance of equity to improve education, with the help of

my teachers. I hope to publish the book in Finland before completing my master’s degree.

I believe you will offer me a place in the programme after taking into account my professional
experience and the firm commitment to do more in this field.

Title of my bachelor’s final thesis: Application areas of 3G technology

Abstract
3G technology is being widely used throughout the world. Since its inception, numerous
operators in different countries have upgraded to this technology. In addition, various services
and applications are being developed and presented to the subscribers. The extreme
popularity of this wireless technology over its predecessors is characterised by the
introduction of multimedia services.

Among various applications, videoconferencing or video calling has really been accepted by
subscribers with great enthusiasm and interest. In this paper, a detailed overview of the 3G
technology has been presented. Besides, videoconferencing has been discussed in detail.

Conclusion
3G mobile communication will definitely be an important milestone in technology. Data rates
will be higher in the near future and the uses of smart phones will soar. As a result, handsets
will be an indispensable part of our lives. The telecommunications environment of tomorrow
might be very different from that of today. Some changes will be evolutionary. Other
developments could be revolutionary in their impact.

In the near future, further enhancements will be seen in this area. A wide variety of
technologies are being harnessed to deliver optimal access. Advanced modulation and
coding schemes, spectrum sharing techniques and new multiple access schemes for the
radio interface will enhance performance by improving spectrum and bandwidth efficiency.
Processing the applications takes time and we ask you to be patient. The student selection results are released on 5 May
2016. Good luck, and we hope to see you in Rovaniemi, Lapland!
