SCENARIO #1
God chose a people to be His own people to manifest His loving plan of salvation for all humanity. God saved them from slavery and formed
them into one people by making a covenant with them through Moses. God spoke to them through Moses saying, “You yourselves have
seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant,
then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and
a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”
God fulfilled His promise to give them a land. When they had settled in the land of Israel and needed rulers to lead them, God chose
people to be their leaders. When they asked for a king, God granted their request. At the beginning of their life as a kingdom, they had
Saul, David, and Solomon. But the kings were not always faithful to God. David sinned yet he repented. God forgave him and did not
revoke the covenant He made with him.
QUESTIONS FOR SCENARIO #1
2. How does God continue showing His great love and mercy to the people today?
SCENARIO #2
THE MODERN-DAY PROPHET: MOTHER TERESA
Mother Teresa is a modern-day prophet who reflects similar qualities of Amos. Mother Theresa and Amos both recognized the lack of justice
in the world today and its social unfairness. Her efforts to improve the lives of the struggling people were positive but at times she had
difficulty spreading her views with the many criticizers of the communities. She struggled with some groups of people who opposed her
view on various subjects, including her efforts opposing contraception and the standards she held for certain hospices. Because Mother
Teresa had a strong opinion regarding charitable works, it was difficult when others did not understand her perspective on the issues or
called her a hypocrite for some of her tactics. She continued to voice her opinions to the mass, and this would result in her later receiving
the Noble Peace Prize in 1979. This proved that her voice was indeed heard, and the effects of her actions were positively interpreted.

In Heschell’s text, “What Manner of Man is the Prophet?”, an appropriate quotation can be related to Mother Teresa’s efforts in her
community and across the world. Heschell stated that “Prophecy is the voice that God has lent to the silent agony, a voice to the
plundered poor, to the profaned riches of the world.” Mother Teresa uses her own voice to relay God’s words to the people to bring more
social equality to the community and to better the lives of the poor.
