FISH ON!!
By avid fisherman/ Nudgee student Tate King

Nudgee College is an amazing school, offering an array of sporting

activities for its students. But is there a sport missing from its range?
In my opinion, the answer is yes - Fishing!

Everyone knows that fishing is an enjoyable sport, but it also offers

great health benefits to keep you active and fit. Results from my
survey of Nudgee college students indicate that three out of four
students would be pleased with the introduction of fishing into the
curriculum as this sport offers active exercise for all. Fishing is
often thought of as but this is a misconception. In fact, fishing
requires the use of multiple muscles, including those in the shoulders
and core, as well as requiring passive activity flexibility, endurance, and
strength. For instance, fly fishing is a particularly demanding form of
fishing that involves challenging casts, making it a full-body workout.
Additionally, finding the perfect fishing spot often requires a lot of
walking and standing for extended periods of time. Therefore, fishing
can be considered an energetic sport that engages the body in various
ways.

Furthermore, fishing has been found to have an active impact on

mental health, particularly in r significantly reducing stress levels.
Various studies have shown that the stress-reducing benefits of fishing
can last for up to three weeks. Spending time outdoors and away
from electronic devices while engaging in this leisurely activity can
promote a sense of calmness and help boost happy hormones, leading
to a healthier lifestyle. Fishing is a sport that can be enjoyed by anyone,
regardless of their fitness level, and starting at a young age can
provide lifelong benefits.

Friendly fishing finds friends!" Fishing itself is inherently social,

creating an environment where emotions like empathy and camaraderie
are shared’(Pablo Koch-Schick, May 18, 2022). This aspect of angling
is another benefit linked to improving mental fitness. Many people who
are students will benefit from such an activity in more ways than one.
Therefore there is no doubt in my mind that Nudgee College should
introduce fishing as a sport next year. With your support, we can
improve our college/community fitness through fishing.

To involve students and the community in fishing I suggest that Nudgee

hosts a fabulous fly fishing competition open to all. Fishing isn’t just
another sport, it is an opportunity to get fit both physically and
mentally as well as adopt new friends and lifelong skills through an
active lifestyle. As you can see, fishing is a great sport which
promotes an active lifestyle. Whether you are a novice or an
experienced angler the benefits are amazing which is why Nudgee
College would adopt it as their next big sport!
