when the ship is working in seaway it is subjected to many stresses in
the three directions, name those stresses according to there
directions? (10 marks)

types of sealing arrangements which used to prevent water ingress and
oil leakage? (6 marks)
- Stuffing boxes consisting of packing material.
- Lip seals in contact with shaft to prevent passage of oil or water
along the shaft.
- Radial face seals supported with springs fitted radially around the
shaft, aft bulkheads and after end of the stern tube.
3- What is meant by the following terms:
Lightening holes, Stringers, Center girder, Deck beams, Panting
stringers, Deck girders? (6 marks)
- Lightening holes: holes cut into floors or intercostals to reduce
weight and to provide access to tank areas.
- Stringers: run longitudinally along the sides of the ship (nominally
above the bilge strake) and stiffen the side shell plating.
- Center girder: In lieu of longitudinal, provide longitudinal
strength.
- Deck beams: run transversely and stiffen the various deck plating.
- Panting stringers: internal horizontal plates secured to the shell
plating and braced athwart ships by the panting beams.
- Deck girders: run longitudinally and stiffen the various deck
plating.

6- With reference to Load Line, explain the following terms with the aid of
a simple sketch? (8 marks)
Deck Line, Load Line Disc, Load Lines.
- Deck Line – It is a horizontal line measuring 300mm by 25mm. It
passes through the upper surface of the freeboard.
- Load Line Disc – It is 300mm diameter and 25mm thick round shaped
disc. It is intersected by a horizontal line. The upper edge of the
horizontal line marks the ‘Summer salt water line’ also known as ‘Plimsol
Line’.
- Load Lines – Load lines are horizontal lines extending forward and aft
from a vertical line placed at a distance of 540mm from the centre of
the disc. They measure 230mm by 23mm. The upper surfaces of the load
lines indicate the maximum depths to which the ships maybe submerged
in different seasons and circumstances.
