1 COMMUNICATION WORKSHEET Talking about likes and dislikes

Aims: To revise describing likes and dislikes, and

agreeing and disagreeing by doing a class survey.
Time: 15–20 minutes
Materials: One copy of the worksheet for each student.
Procedure:
• Give a copy of the worksheet to each student.
• Explain that first they are going to complete the
sentences according to their likes and dislikes. Then
they are going to fill in the table with their classmates’
names depending on whether they agree or disagree.
• Remind students to practise using the phrases they
learned in the speaking lesson, shown also in this box:

PHRASEBOOK Talking about likes and dislikes

love
enjoy / like
don’t like
can’t stand / hate
Agreeing
I love football. → Me too./So do I.
I don’t like singing. → Me neither./Neither do I.
I can’t stand reading. → Me neither./Neither can I.
Disagreeing
I love cooking. → Really? I don’t.
I don’t like drawing. → Really, I do!
I can’t stand orchestra. → Really? I love it!

• Students complete the sentences in the first column so

they are true for them. They use an appropriate likes /
dislikes verb depending on their preference.
• Students then move around the classroom and tell
their classmates their preferences. When a classmate
has the same answer and agrees with their preference,
students can write the person’s name in the second
column of the worksheet, e.g.
A I hate playing video games.
B So do I.
A [writes B’s name in the ‘Same’ column]
• When the classmate disagrees, they write the person’s
name in the third column and make a note of their
preference. Note that when a classmate disagrees, they
should always say what their preference is.
A I hate playing video games.
B Really? I don’t. I enjoy playing them.
A [writes B’s name in the ‘Different’ column and writes
‘enjoys’]
• Students continue talking to different classmates and
filling in the worksheet.
• The winner is the first person to fill the ‘Same’ and
‘Different’ columns with names.
• Ask students to look at their worksheet and summarise
the results of the survey, e.g.
Hanna and I hate playing video games. I love after-
school clubs, but Marcus hates them.
