A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 8- EARTH AND SPACE

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the 60-minute discussion, the students will be able to:
 distinguish the difference meteoroids, meteor and meteorites
 create a model of meteoroids, meteor and meteorites
 cite scientific basis to support one’s stand about superstitions on meteors.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Concept: Other Member of the Solar System
B. Sub-concepts: Comparison between Meteoroids, Meteor and Meteorites
C. Materials: Laptop, PowerPoint Presentation, visual aids

III. LEARNING PROCEDURE

TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY

A. Motivation
Have you ever witnessed a meteor streaking across
the night sky? Have you ever used these moments
to reflect on your aspirations and dreams, perhaps
using the streaking meteor as a catalyst for setting a
new goal?

Students vary in answers

B. Presentation
Alright class, considering the comments you have
shared, do any of you have information about
today’s topic?

Meteoroids
Meteors
Meteorites
You got it right!

Before we proceed to our discussion, let’s have first

a group activity. You are task to make a model of
Meteoroids, Meteor, Meteorites out of the story
given to you.
(See attached activity sheets)
Students will perform
C. Discussion
G1. Meteoroid are lamps of rock
or iron that orbit the sun. Most
meteoroids are small fragments of
rock created by the asteroid
collisions.

G2. A meteor is a streak of light

in the sky caused by a meteoroid
crashing through Earth’s
atmosphere.

G3. Meteorites are remnant of

meteoroids that have reached the
Earth’s surface.

Class, you must remember that meteoroids are

debris or fragments from either, comets, asteroids
or Moon. It is much smaller than asteroids. Once it
enters the Earth’s atmosphere, it is now called
meteor which seems to come across the sky
forming a streak of light. When it survived as it
landed to the surfaces of the Earth, it is now called
as meteorite.

So, what make them different? The factor that makes meteoroid,
meteor and meteorite different is
the location, that is: in outer space
it is meteoroid, in atmosphere
meteor and in Earth’s surface
meteorite.

D. Application
Last meeting, I told you to interview your
grandmother or grandfather about superstitious
beliefs related to meteors. This time you will be
going to read their responses. The students will share the
responses they obtained during
the interview.

E. Generalization
To recap all the concepts, we discussed today
kindly watch this video.

IV. EVALUATION
Modified True or False
Direction: indicate whether the statement is True or
False. If False, change the word or phrase to make
the statement true. The students will follow
1. Meteors are rocky bodies found in the inner
solar system.
2. The bright streak of light produced by a
meteoroid entering the Erath’s atmosphere
is called meteorite.
3. The Perseids and Leonids are examples of
meteorites.
4. Meteoroids are composed of both rocky and
metallic materials.
5. Meteors are same with comets.

V. ASSIGNMENT

 Make a Venn diagram showing the

similarities and difference of Meteoroid,
Meteors and Meteorites
