Instructions: Answer all the questions from this part.
Specimen C is KMnO4 crystals
Ai. Half fill a 250cm3 beaker with distilled water or clean water
ii. Place the beaker of water on a flat table
iii. Using spatula/small spoon introduce/drop gently a crystal of the permanganate into the
beaker with water undisturbed.
iv. Observe the colour of the contents in the beaker at the following intervals.
- Immediately after dropping the crystal
- 05 minutes later
- 15 minutes later
- 30 minutes later

1. Immediately after dropping
crystal
2. 05 minutes later
3. 15 minutes later
4. 30 minutes later
vi. Make a labelled diagram of a 8cm – 10cm of the beaker and its contents as it appears after
15 minutes
b. What physiological process does the experiment demonstrate?
c. Suggest a suitable title for the experiment?

2. Identify Specimen A, B and C

a. Classify specimens A, B and C according to the following criteria
i. Agricultural classification
ii. Botanical Classification
iii. Life cycle
bi. State two ways in which specimen C is important to human nutrition
ii. State the classes of food Specimen A and C belong

3. Specimen D is onion bulb

Peel off the thin skin from the inner (concave) surface of a fleshy leaf of an onion bulb. Place
this on a clean microscope slide, taking care not to fold it upon itself. Stain it with one drop
of iodine solution and gently lower a cover slip over it. After about one minute, examine the
specimen under a microscope. Draw what you see and label the parts of the cell.
