MLA 101: Formatting and Citations

Instructions
Step 1: Format your paper:
• Select the font: Times New Roman, size 12 pt
• Format the text: Double space (2.0) everything on the page;
Click Remove Space after paragraph
• Format the header:
– Your name (first name last name)
– Your professor’s name (first name last name)
– The class and/or course number
– Date of submission (Month Day, Year)
• In the top right corner, include the page number, then last name
• Add the title of the paper, center it in the middle of the page.
Capitalize Key words.

Step 2: Format the body of your paper:
• Indent the first paragraph. Write the introduction. Include the research
question/thesis.
• Indent subsequent parapraphs; there is no spacing between paragraphs
Step 3: Add the Works Cited page
• List the references/sources on a separate page
Insert a page break
• Center the title: Works Cited
• Right align and add your references in alphabetical order

• Cite work using in-text citation (give credit to the author)
Direct Quote “ …..”
Paraphrase (summarize someone else's ideas in your own words).

Step 4: Write your paper: Avoid plagiarism
What is Plagiarism?

Keeping any of the same vocabulary without quotations, even if


cited

Keeping the original order of ideas or sentence structure without


quotations, even if cited (no cutting and pasting and using
synonyms)

Not using ANY of your own ideas (entire paper is cited)

Inaccurately paraphrasing or misrepresenting the authors


intentions.
