USING SOFTWARE TO COMPUTE AND

PRESENT GRAPHS AND BUSINESS DATA

for Business Mathematics
Senior High School (ABM)
Quarter 2 / Week 8

1
FOREWORD

This self-learning kit will serve as a guide in illustrating the

different types of commissions and in computing
commissions on cash basis and commissions on installment
basis. It includes solving real-life problems by applying your
knowledge on the different types of commissions.

In this learning kit, you will gain knowledge in

computing different types of commissions and
commissions on cash basis and commissions on installment
basis.

I. What Happened
This part contains review of prior knowledge that has
a great contribution to the focused topic of this module.
This also contains preliminary activities that will awaken the
prior knowledge of the learners and will motivate them to
learn.
II. What You Need To Know
Knowledge on the use of computers is a big help in
statistics. You simply have to enter the data and the
computer does all the needed computation. In this part,
we will use MS Excel and SPSS which are of great help in
doing computations.
III. What Have I Learned
The exercises found in this section are guaranteed to
develop mathematical understanding, skills, and
competence. These serve as an analytical tool to identify
the learners’ areas of strengths and difficulties.

2
OBJECTIVES:
K. Identify the use of MS Excel and SPSS for certain
business applications.
S. Use MS Excel and SPSS to prepare tables.
A. Appreciate the use of MS Excel and SPSS
in solving problems in business mathematics.

I. WHAT HAPPENED

In the previous discussions, we were able to learn how to compute or

solve manually the different business-related problems. This time we are going
to learn how to use software applicable to business related problems.

PRE-ACTIVITIES/PRE-TEST:
Matching Type: Match the statements in column A with the word/s in
column B. Write the letter that corresponds to your answer in your activity
notebook.

COLUMN A COLUMN B

1. This is the place where all A. Status Bar

the important tools can be B. Formula Bar
placed C. Ribbon
2. It is like an expanded D. Quick Access Toolbar
menu. It depicts all the E. Spreadsheet Grid
features of Excel in easy-
to-understand form.

3. This is where any

calculations or formulas
you write will appear.

4. This is where all your

numbers, data, charts and
drawings will go.

5. This tells us what is going

on with Excel at anytime.

3
II. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

DISCUSSION:
MS Excel
Handling data would be one of the main reasons why you are
using Excel. Excel is quite intuitive and simple to use when it comes to typing
data or handling it. Because of its grid nature, it can store and manage
thousands of data points with ease. Built-in features like copy, paste, find,
highlight, go to, styles, etc. make the process of maintaining data very easy
for you.

Excel looks like this when you open it:

There are 5 important areas in the screen:

1. Quick Access Toolbar: This is the place where all the important tools can
be placed. When you start Excel for the very time, it has only three icons
(Save, Undo, Redo). But you can add any feature of Excel to Quick
Access Toolbar so that you can easily access it from anywhere.

2. Ribbon: Ribbon is like an expanded menu. It depicts all the features of

Excel in easy-to-understand form. Since Excel has thousands of features,
they are grouped into several ribbons. The most important ribbons are
Home, Insert, Formulas, Page Layout, and Data.

3. Formula Bar: This is where any calculations or formulas you write will
appear. You will understand the relevance of it once you start building
formulas.

4
4. Spreadsheet Grid: This is where all your numbers, data, charts and
drawings will go. Each Excel file can contain several sheets. But the
spreadsheet grid shows few rows and columns of active spreadsheet. To
see more rows or columns, you can use the scroll bars to the left or at
bottom. If you want to access other sheets, just click on the sheet name
( or use the shortcut CTRL + Page Up or CTRL + Page Down).

5. Status Bar: This tells us what is going on with Excel at any time. You can
tell if Excel is busy calculating a formula, creating a pivot report, or
recording a macro by just looking at the status bar. The status bar also
shows quick summaries of selected cells (count, sum, average,
minimum, or maximum values). You can change this by right-clicking on
it and choosing which summaries to show.

Excel is a spreadsheet program that allows you to store, organize and

analyze information. Anyone can learn how to take advantage of Excel’s
powerful features. Whether you are keeping a budget, organizing a training
log, or creating an invoice, Excel makes it easy to work with different kinds of
data.

The Home tab gives you access to some of the most commonly used
commands for working with data, including copy and paste, formatting and
number styles.
To add commands to the Quick Access toolbar:
1. Click the drop-down arrow to the right of the Quick Access toolbar.
2. Select the command you wish to add from the drop-down menu. To
choose from more commands, select More Commands.

5
When working with a large amount of data, you can create
multiple worksheets to help organize your workbook and make it easier to
find content.

SPSS

Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) is a statistics analysis

package that allows the user to perform all manner of statistical
calculations quickly and easily. SPSS is a commercial package, but free trial
version is available. A trial version of SPSS is available at the SPSS website.
Advanced students and statisticians can also purchase a full license version
from the site as well.

SPSS looks like this when you open it:

After you have entered data to the window like the one shown above
and analyzed it the results looks like this.

6
III. WHAT HAVE I LEARNED
EVALUATION/POST TEST:
Identify the word/s being described in each statement. Write your
answers in your activity notebook.

1. ________________ is a spreadsheet program that allows you to store,

organize, and analyze information.

2. ________________ is a statistics analysis package that allows the user to

perform all manners of statistical calculations quickly and easily.

3. _______________ tells us what is going with Excel at any time.

4. _______________ is the place where all important tools can be placed.

5. _______________ is where any calculations or formulas you write will

appear.

6. ________________ it depicts all the features of Excel in easy-to-

understand form.

7. ________________ is where all your numbers, data, charts and drawings

will go.

7
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITY:

Consider the following data, obtained by a researcher who listens to

each of 20 randomly selected radio stations for one hour and records the
number of minutes devoted to advertisements and to programming.

1. Input the following information about each of the researchers’ variables

into the Variable View screen in SPSS.
a. variable name: station
type: string
b. variable name: format
decimals: 0
label: type of programming
values: 1=top 40
2=easy listening
3=classic rock/oldies
4=jazz
5=classical
6=talk
99=other
100=no data
c. variable name: ads
decimals: 0
label: minutes of aired advertisements
d. variable name: program
decimals: 0
label: minutes of aired programming

8
2. Input the data values for the variables identified and described in #9,
into the Data View screen of SPSS.
3. Use the SPSS Sort function to place data in order from least to most time
devoted to advertisements.
4. a. The researcher wishes to analyze stations that have a clearly identified
format. Use the SPSS Filter function to omit stations that fall into the
“other” or “no data” categories from future analysis.
b. Check to be sure that the Data View screen reflects the placement
of the filter.
c. Remove the filter.
5. a. The researcher wishes to focus on only stations with a talk format. Use
the SPSS Filter function to omit all other stations from future analysis.
b. Check to be sure that the Data View screen reflects the placement
of the filter.
c. Remove the filter.
6. a. The researcher wishes to obtain separate statistics for the stations in
each of the format categories. Use the SPSS Split File function to prepare
data for such an analysis. (Remember that the appearance of the data
screen does not change.)
b. Remove the split file designation.
7. The researcher knows that radio all of the stations included in his or her
analysis charge $40 in advertising fees for each minute of
advertisements broadcast. Use the SPSS Compute function to determine
how much money each station collects from advertising fees.
8. Use the SPSS Compute function to determine the amount of time per hour
that each station devotes to broadcasts other than programming and
advertisements (e.g. news, traffic, weather, etc.).
