The Machine
L&T SL230 is a vibratory compactor attachment
suitable to mount on 20- ton class excavator
featuring 1225 mm (48 in) wide drums. The
attachment is equipped with hydraulic
vibration motor, vibration valve block, support
structure and scraper.
Intended use
L&T SL230 is mainly designed to be used for soil
compaction in canals with regards to single
amplitude and single frequency vibration that
are optimized for this purpose.

1.1. General Safety

Walk around the machine to ensure that all
safety related items are present and if any
maintenance is required. Never operate the
machine in unsafe conditions. Visually
inspect the machine for:
♦ Presence of physical damage.
♦ Deformation, cracks or bending of
structures and their welds. If any defect is
observed, do not operate the machine until
the defect is rectified.
♦ Loose or missing hardware like bolts or nuts
should be tightened/ replaced to
manufacturer’s recommended
specifications and torque.
♦ Check for oil leaks. Hydraulic system leaks
should be corrected before operating the
machine.
NEVER SWING THE
COMPACTOR OVER PERSONNEL OR
PASSENGER VEHICLES.
♦ Never allow any personnel to either walk or
work under any part of the machine, when
the machine is working.
♦ NEVER allow anyone to ride in /on the
attachment with/without load for whatever
reason.
♦ Never try to operate the machine except
from the operator's seat. The machine may
go out of control. NEVER EXCEED THE LIFTING
CAPACITY OF THE EXCAVATOR.
♦ Always stay within the lifting limits as shown
in the excavator specification sheet.

Use your own judgement and make sure that
the base/ground is stable enough to operate
the machine.

♦ Especially look for the leak at the hydraulic

connections under continuous flexing.

♦ Ensure that there is adequate clearance for

swing. Do not keep or store in flammable
materials on the machine. Keep all such
material away from heat source, sparks and
naked flames. Do not burn such containers
since they might explode.

♦ Level off the working area, if possible. If not,
slow down the working cycle.
♦ Avoid swinging or extending the attachment
more than required, in the downhill
direction. Unnecessary extension of the
attachment will reduce the machine
stability.
When working with the
compactor on the uphill side,
the Excavator may tip if the
slope is too steep.
♦ Avoid working with the tracks across the
slope, as this reduces the stability of the
machine and increases the tendency of the
machine to slide.
1.2.1 Communications in
Worksite
♦ Worksites can be noisy; do not rely on
spoken commands.
♦ When working with another operator or
with a person on worksite traffic duty, be
sure that the personnel understand all hand
signals that are to be used in the worksite.
♦ Always keep people around you informed of
what you will be doing.
1.2.2 Visibility
Do not operate the machine if you
cannot see the Path or worksite

clearly. Accidents can be caused by
working with poor visibility.
If the headlamps are not sufficient for a safe
operation at the construction site, install
additional lamps to light the travel or working
area.
Stop operation if the visibility is poor, such as
mist, snow or rain. Wait for the weather to
improve to a condition that allows the
operation to be carried out safely.
1.2.3 Waste Material Disposal
♦ Never drain oil directly on ground. Always
drain oil from your machine in a container
♦ For waste disposal, obey and follow
appropriate Laws and regulations in your
country or worksite. Never dump or dispose
harmful objects such as oil, fuel, coolant,
solvent, filters, batteries, etc. in a sewer
system, rivers etc.
1.2.4 Safety for Transporting
NOTICE: When transporting the machine,
observe all related laws and regulations of
your State / Country, and be careful to assure
safety.
♦ Obey all state and local laws governing the
weight, width, and length of a load. Observe
all regulations governing wide loads.
♦ Ensure the suitability of the transporting
vehicle.
♦ Make sure that, the transporter is aware of
the maximum height of your machine
loaded on to the transporting vehicle and
necessary clearance height to be
maintained while driving.

2.2. Operating the Compactor

1. Make the Slope Compactor roller to
contact the surface to be compacted by
adjusting the boom and stick cylinders of
excavator as shown in Fig. 1

2. Switch ON the Foot pedal or Foot switch to

start the vibration operation.

3. The compactor is guided along the slope

by using Boom cylinder & Stick cylinder which
is controlled using Joystick/Lever present in
the excavator.

4. Move the excavator to next position and

compact by repeating the process.

3.1. Maintenance
The maintenance schedules given below
have been determined keeping certain site
conditions in view. However, the
maintenance schedules should be discussed
with the L&T- Service Engineer and a
comprehensive schedule should be worked
out depending upon the site condition and
equipment usage.

Following maintenance intervals are

Adaptation
L&T SL230 is best suited for 20 Ton class
Excavators. Long Chassis (LC) under carriage is
preferred for better machine stability and load
carrying capacity.

Mounting bracket is unique for each

excavator model. LTCEL will provide suitable
bracket for adaption.

3.1.4 Oil Replacement for through the level plug hole.

1. Remove the HEX M10 BOLTS (1) and Closing
Plate (2) along with the O-RING (3) as shown
in Fig 8.

2. Tilt the slope compactor so that the oil inside it

drains out. Now pour the new oil inside it and
close the housing using and Closing Plate (2)
along with the O-RING (3) and mount HEX M10
BOLTS (1).

3.1.5 Oil Replacement for Tapper

1. Remove the HEX M16 (1) bolts and Suspended
Frame (2) on the side oil to be replaced for
tapper roller bearing as shown in Fig – 9.

2. Then remove the AVM Mounting Plate (3).

3. Now remove the drain Plug and Seal (4) so

that the oil inside will drain completely.

4. Then close the Drain Plug and Seal (4).

5. Remove the Filling Plug & Seal (5) and Level

Plug & Seal (6).

6. Now pour the new oil till oil over flows

and affect the contact force. Clean when
necessary.

4. The Scrapers (1) & (2) are shown in Fig 12.

spanner.

3. Keep the compactor horizontally on

level ground in such a way that all the
assembled parts are accessible, as
shown in Fig 11.

4. Now remove the Suspended frame (2)

shown in Fig 11.

Lubricate the bearings with ISO VG 150.

5. Unscrew 6 Nos. of M16 Bolts (3) by using

24 no. box spanner and then remove the
AVM Mounting plate (4) as shown in
Fig-11.

 WASTE MANAGEMENT

1. OIL, DIESEL, COOLANT & GREASE:

To prevent pollution, particularly in places where people or animals

are living, always follow the procedures given below:

 Never dump waste oil, coolant in a sewer system, river, lake or INCORRECT
such other locations

 Always put oil drained from your machine in containers. Never

drain oil directly onto the ground. Collect waste oil and send it to
authorized disposal agents or oil reconditioning plant.

 Follow appropriate laws and regulations while disposing of

harmful objects such as oil, coolant, solvent, used filters. Similarly
follow the above procedure for grease / oil sludge/ diesel sludge.

2. METALLIC WASTE:

 Collect and segregate metallic waste in to steel, aluminum, bronze

etc.

 Send them to re-melting shops or dispose as metallic scrap.

3. HAEMATITE CONCRETE:

 Counter weight at the end of its life can be broken and the
hematite portion can be used as filling debris for low-lying areas
and pits.

4. BATTERY:

 Batteries contain lead content. It is essential to follow the batteries

act and dispose the waste through authorised disposal agents or
give it back to battery manufacturers.

 "It shall be the responsibility of the consumer/customer to ensure

that used batteries are NOT DISPOSED OFF in any manner other
than depositing with the dealer, manufacturer, importer,
assembler, registered recycler, re-conditioner or at designated
collection centres".

5. PLASTIC, RUBBER, NYLON, FOAMS, GLASS AND FRP:

 Dispose them in line with local regulation as applicable.

6. OIL & GREASE SOAKED - COTTON WASTE & PAPER:

 Dispose them in line with local Hazardous Waste Management and

handling rules as applicable.

7. ELECTRONIC AND ELECTRICAL GOODS:

 Use authorized agencies for disposing off Air-conditioning Refrigerant
