Activity 1b: Amir and Harry visit a book fair on World Book Day. Read the text
below carefully.

The book fair

The Municipal Council of Port-Louis is organising a book fair on the 23rd of April. It is the
day on which World Book Day is celebrated. Amir is very excited to attend the opening
with his parents. After the traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony, the famous author of
children’s books, Miss Anoucheka, talks about the importance of reading. She ends
her speech by saying, “Reading will help you reach for the stars.” After that, a little
girl disguised as Snow White offers Miss Anoucheka a bouquet and invites her to visit
the exhibition.

Amir is fascinated by the colourful banners and posters that create a joyful atmosphere.
Suddenly, he hears someone calling him, “Hi Amir! What a pleasant surprise!” He sees his
classmate, Harry. “Let’s go to the stalls where there are picture books,” Harry says. There,
Harry takes a book titled ‘The Cat in the Hat’, written by Dr. Seuss. He looks at the illustrations.
“Have a look at this, Amir,” he says pointing to the picture of a tall cat wearing a hat and a
bow tie. Just then, Harry feels a tap on his shoulder. He turns around and is surprised to see
someone dressed exactly like the cat in the book. On seeing Harry’s astonished expression,
people around him start laughing.

Both friends then walk to the stall where

board books are displayed. These
books have bright and colourful pictures
to attract very young readers. The pages
are very thick to prevent wear and tear.
Amir and Harry go through the books
enthusiastically. The two boys suddenly
hear a little girl laughing as she turns the
pages of a board book. She seems to find
the illustrations funny. Her father looks at
her and smiles.

As they notice a crowd of children at another stall, the two boys are curious to know what is
happening. They hurriedly go there and they see different types of books, such as science
fiction, fairy tales, folk tales, mystery, and informational. Amir takes a book, looks at its
cover and immediately says, “I don’t like this book.” “Don’t judge a book by its cover,”
he hears someone telling him. Amir’s cheeks turn red with embarrassment as he sees
that the person talking to him is Miss Anoucheka. Amir apologises and takes a closer look

at the book. Miss Anoucheka tells him, “You must read different types of books to get ideas
and new vocabulary.” “Yes, Madam,” replies Amir. Before Amir and Harry leave that stall,
they ask Miss Anoucheka for an autograph. To their delight, she immediately signs one for
each of them. The two boys thank her. They will proudly show this to their friends whenever
Miss Anoucheka publishes a new book.

Amir and Harry leave the book fair carrying two bags full of books. The two bookworms
enjoyed spending the whole day surrounded with authors and books.
