Making Inference
An inference is an assumption that you make about something that you see, read, or
experience.

1. The room was dark and quiet. We heard Carlo and his mother come in the front
door talking. I heard two girls in the corner giggle nervously. Another girl told
them to be quiet. I hid behind the table where the cake and presents were set out.
The tension in the room grew as we waited for them to open the door.

2. I arrived early for my appointment. The place was busy and smelled of chemicals.
I found a place to sit and wait. The lady next to me had a towel around her head. I
heard a blow dryer in the distance. It was loud over the music that was playing.

3. As I entered the door, I thought this was a great way to end the day. The
chalkboard menu had a list of specialties, like milk teas and shakes. I looked at all
the flavors. Chocolate is my favorite, but avocado graham sounded good, too.

envelope from his pocket. He blushed and tried to put it in Veronica’s mailbox, but it wouldn’t
quite fit. Bernardo struggled with it for a few seconds and then ran off with the envelope.

Jenny looked in the mirror at the bright red pustule on her nose. She poked at it carefully,
afraid that it might burst on her dress. It was large and painful. The more she prodded it,
the larger it got. This is not how it was supposed to go! Gina thought to herself. Then she
began crying. Her mother yelled up the stairs, "Jenny! Eric is here!" This news made
Jenny even more distraught. Now her makeup was running and just as she feared, some
of it got on her dress. "Why me? Why today?" Jenny lamented to herself between sobs
and gasps.
