20 (a) What do you understand by an isothermal process of an ideal gas, and derive an
expression for the work done in the process? [4 marks ]

(b) A cylinder with a movable, light and frictionless piston contains 2.0 moles of monatomic
ideal gas. The initial pressure, volume and temperature of the gas are 1.5 x 105 Pa,
3.3 x 10-2m3 and 300 K repectively. The following process are carried out to the system.

Process X : The gas is allowed to expand adiabatically to a volume of 9.9 x 10-2 m3 .


Process Y : Then, the gas is compressed isothermally back to its initial volume.
Process Z : Finally, the gas is heated at constant volume back to its initial state.
