Task 1. Sentence Evaluation

1. The ball hits the boy. The sentence is grammatically correct as it follows the rules of S-V-A.

2. She seen zoned me. The sentence is correct, it entails that you sent a message but the person whom you sent
your message did not bother to reply but just seen it.

3. Crack the window. The sentence is still correct even is it sounds awkward. It is correct because it is just an
expression to make a statement cool. If we are going to examine the meaning of the meaning of the sentence
deeply, we can find out that the speaker wanted the window a little bit opened.

4. One morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. The structure of the sentence is correct however, its meaning
is a little bit confusing because how can an elephant get inside in his pajamas. This famous joke of Groucho Marx
is correct because it is a figurative language.

5. The horse raced the barn fell. The sentence is an example of garden path sentences which tricks the reader in
interpreting its meaning. Therefore, the sentence is correct because a garden path sentences is acceptable in
English rules.

6. Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo. The phrase makes grammatical sense because
buffalo has three meaning but I believe in formal writing this sentence is not acceptable even if it makes sense. It
does not qualify to requirement of sentence which is the subject and complete thought.

7. The old man the boat. The sentence is grammatically correct. If we are going to examine the structure of the
sentence it will be like this: "The old" is a term for "elderly people" and "man" functions as verb means "to
operate" the object "the boat". Therefore, the sentence means that the person operating the boat is an old one.

Task 2. Defining Terms

Terms Definition
Phonetic is a branch of linguistics which focuses on the sounds. In particular, it looks
into the how the sounds should be articulated , transmitted and received.
Phonology is the study of the functions of speech sounds in a language . its focus is on
the ways speech sounds are organized.
Morphology is the study of the construction and formation of words. It is a branch of
linguistics, which break words into morphemes and is considered the
grammar words.
Syntax is the study of relationship between linguistic forms, how they are arranged
in sequences and which sequences are well-formed.
Semantics is the study of relationships between linguistic forms and entities in the
world. It focuses on the meaning of the sentence.
Pragmatics is the study of relationship between linguistic forms and the users of those
forms.

The field of study that looks at how linguistics can help to understand
real-life problems in areas such as psychology, sociology and
education.
