INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE

1) Linguistics is a science that focuses on language and its use as a means of communication. By
studying linguistics in depth, society can develop critical awareness and gain invaluable skills for
your future working life vital communication, analytical and critical skills.

2) The branch of linguistics is divided according to the object of discussion including phonetics and
phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics.
a. Phonetics and phonology
Phonetics is the study of speech processes, phonetics also studies how to produce
certain sounds, both in terms of quantity and quality. Phonology is a field of general
linguistics, the goal is that you can learn the function of sound to differentiate as well as
word identification
b. Morphology
plays a role in the analysis of structure, form, as well as the formation and classification
of various words. The object of morphological research is morpheme, the smallest
grammatical unit that has meaning.
c. Syntax
Syntax discusses words that are related to other words, or other elements in a unit of
speech. There are several things that are often studied in syntax such as syntactic
structures related to categories, functions, and roles. Can also learn about syntactic
units such as words, phrases, discourse, and sentences.
d. Semantics
Semantics is the study of the meaning of language. There are various things that can be
discussed in semantics, for example the nature of meaning, types of meaning, changes
in meaning, meaning relations, and others that cannot be separated from the meaning
of language.

3) Linguistics is the science of language or the scientific study of language. Aside from being a pure
science that examines and analyzes its objects, linguistics also pays attention to its function in
teaching and research. linguistics contributes to research, providing a strong empirical
foundation for the evaluation of learning and effectiveness in language learning and teaching.
Therefore linguistics is very important in education.
teachers must be able to master linguistics or scientific studies of language.
If I were to become an English teacher, of course I would prepare lesson plans in advance,
discuss with students, more importantly we master the material to be taught and lastly a
teacher has qualified teaching skills.
4) Semantics is learning/knowledge about the meaning or meaning contained in a language,
code/symbol, or other representation.
In analyzing the semantics of a text, we need to pay attention to the level of phrases, clauses,
sentences, paragraphs to the entire writing.
