Aim of the experiment

To prepare the 250 ml of standard solution of M/50 Mohr’s salt solution and to determine the molarity and
strength of given sample of KMnO4 solution using standard solution of M/50 Mohr’s salt solution .
Appratus Required:
1. Weighing balance
2. Burette
3. Pipette
4. Conical flask
5. Funnel
6. Measuring flask
7. Burner
8. Wire gauze
Chemicals Required:
1. KMnO4 solution
2. Mohr’s salt solution
3. Dilute H2SO4
4. Distilled water
Procedure:

1. The burette and pipette were washed and rinsed with distilled water and then
rinsed with the corresponding solution to be filled in them.
2. The burette was rinsed with the potassium permanganate solution and the
burette was filled with potassium permanganate solution.
3. The burette was fixed on the burette stand and a white tile was placed below the
burette in order to find the endpoint correctly.
4. The pipette was rinsed with standard ferrous sulfate solution.
5. 10ml of M/50 standard Mohr’s salt solution was pipetted out into the conical
flask.
6. A test tube full of sulfuric acid was added in order to prevent oxidation of
manganese to form manganese dioxide.
7. The initial reading was noted down on the burette before starting the titration.
8. Then the titration was started , titrate was done against potassium
permanganate solution and simultaneously the solution was swirled in the flask
gently.
9. Initially, the purple colour of KMnO4 was discharged with ferrous ammonium
sulfate. The appearance of a permanent pink colour revealed the endpoint.
10. The titration was repeated until concordant values were obtained.
11. The upper meniscus on the burette readings was noted down.
12. The reading was recorded on the observation table given below in order to
calculate the molarity of KMnO4 given.
