AISSE PRACTICAL EXAMINATION

1. Redox Titration (Permanganometry) 8 marks

1. Aim (Write from the question paper)

2. THEORY
PROCEDURE

Burette - Burette is filled with KMnO4 solution

Pipette – 20ml of the M/20 Mohr’s salt solution is pipetted in to a conical

flask.
Indicator- KMnO4 solution (self indicator)
End point- Appearance of pale pink colour

NOTE-
1 test tube of dilute sulphuric acid is added while preparing mohr’s salt
solution to prevent hydrolysis of the salt.

1 test tube of dilute sulphuric acid is added to the pipetted solution before
titration to provide acidic medium.
Calculation of Molarity and strength

Molarity of KMnO4= M1= ?

Volume of KMnO4 solution = V1ml = ( your concordant value)

Molarity of mohrs salt solution = M2 = 0.05M

Volume of mohr’s salt solution = 20 ml ( volume pipetted)

M1 =

Strength of the given KMnO4 solution = Molarity x Molecular mass

= M1 X 158 g/l
RESULT

1. Molarity of the given KMnO4 solution = --------mol/l or M

2. Strength of the given KMnO4 sOlution= ……….. g/l

MOLARITY to be calculated up to 4 decimals

b) KMnO4 Vs Oxalic acid

Aim- Write from the question paper

Theory-
PROCEDURE

Burette - Burette is filled with KMnO4 solution

Pipette – 20ml of the M/20 oxalic acid solution is pipetted in to a conical

flask.
Indicator- KMnO4 solution (self indicator)

End point- Appearance of pale pink colour

NOTE-
1 test tube of dilute sulphuric acid is added to the pipetted solution and
heated the flask to 60 degrees.
b) Strength of the KMnO4 solution

Strength of the KMnO4 solution =Molarity x molar mass of KMnO4

= M1 x 158

Strength = ---- x158 = -----g/l

RESULT

1. Molarity of the given KMnO4 solution = --------mol/l or M

2. Strength of the given KMnO4 sOlution= ……….. g/l

MOLARITY to be calculated up to 4 decimals

NO NEED TO WRITE IN THE ANSWER SHEET-
understand the Procedure and do the titration accordingly-

Weigh out 1.96 g of mohr’s salt and transfer in to a 100ml standard flask . Add one test
tube sulphuric acid and make up to 100ml.

Rinse and fill the burette with the given KMnO4 solution

Pipette out 20 ml mohrs salt solution in to a conical flask and add 1 test tube of sulphuric
acid

Add KMnO4 from burette till a light pink colour is imparted to the solution in the flask.

Note initial and final reading of the burette.

Repeat titration till you get concordant values.

Weigh out 0.63 g of oxalic acid and make up to 100ml in a standard flask.

Rinse and fill the burette with the given KMnO4 solution

Pipette out 20 ml oxalic acid solution in to a conical flask , add 1 test tube of sulphuric acid
and heat up to 60 degrees.(till you see fumes coming out)
Add KMnO4 from burette till a light pink colour is imparted to the solution in the flask.

Note initial and final reading of the burette.

Repeat titration till you get concordant values.
