"The Indolence of the Filipino people an exploratory essay was written by Jose Rizal, that
attempts to justify the Filipinos supposed laziness and not responsible for their misfortures. This
essays show an investigation about the Filipinos lifestyle during the Spanish rule. Bacause of the
variety rule, Filipinos didn't work hard during the spanish rule. Which is the Spanish reign
resulted in a decrease economic activity.
First is the establishment of galleons trade, which is the Philippine cut of all past relationship
with other country in Asia and the Middle East. Therefore, the independent ventures and the
handiwork enterprises bit by bit disapeared. What's more, the Spanish government just utilized
two gelleons to exchange to Manila from Mexico.
Second, When Spanish set a Bad example, officials reported to work at noon and left early.
While most of them are doing nothings in line with their duties. A lot of personal task that they
should have to complete with their own, spanish women are often seen being accompanied with
servants who dressed and fanned them.
The implementation of labor, war between spain and other Europeans country led to the Filipinos
compelled to work at shipyards, roads and other public works and projects. Filipinos have to
abandon agriculture, Industry and commerce that they exeled.
The rigged educational system, what was thaught in classroom were repititive prayers that cannot
be used by students to lead the country to progress because they have no courses in agriculture
and Industries which were essential for a developing country.
Pirate attacks, Filipino people was not protected by spain from the pirates and foreign invaders.
A lot Filipinos houses was burned, natives were killed and their land was destroyed. After that
Filipinos lost their interest to rebuild their properties were affected and to cultivate their lands
and became submissive to the mercy of God.
(Sugal) Gambling was spread widely those times during fiestas and celebrations during with
occations. And some Filipinos adapted it and applied during fiestas but cockfight were held
almost everyday and on feast day. Filipinos Gave their contribution during fiesta, novenae,
procession and rosaries. And the government officials were the first to take part on bets and
gamblings.
The corrupt religious and sculpture, The friars advised their poor parishioneers’, to stop work in
the mines to abandone their commerce; to breakup their looms and pointing them that heaven is
their only hope. The natives Filipinos were told by Spanish friars that being poor is not a
problem and a curse but poorman is better to reach the heaven than it was for a rich man. So
natives Filipinos choosed not to work and stay poor so that they can easily to enter the heaven
after death, Bacause they learned from the church wrong doctrine which hold that the rich will
not going to heaven.
Taxes were extremely high, majority of what the Filipino worker earned went to the government
or to the friars have recieved the large portion of some Filipinos workers earnings. They were
reduced to inactions and treated as slave cause they were abused and objects of their labors was
taken away.
According to Rizal, all the causes of indolence may be reduced to 2 factors. The primary factor is
that the limited training and education Filipino natives recieve. They Separated from Spaniards,
Filipinos do now no longer to acquire the identical possibilities which are to be had to the
foreigners. They're taught to be inferior. The second factor is that the shortage of a countrywide
sentiment of solidarity amongst them. Because Filipinos think they're inferior, they withstand the
foreign culture and do everything to imitate it. The answer and the only key, in keeping with
Rizal, would be education, could be training and liberty.
Lastly is when, Rizal acknowledge that the prior work Gregorio Sancianco doesn't exist among
the Filipinos. Filipino did not work as hard as they can, won't try their best in life because they
learned about the temperature climate. They had adapt to the warm and tropical environment.
And like what Rizal's said work under that the burning sun, in the midst of pernicious influences
in spring from nature in activity is equal to day's labor in a temperature climate.
And now that we knew about the past life of the Filipinos during the Spanish rule. It's important
to us to remember that the indolence is a chronic illness in the Philippines, not an inherited one.
It is evident from the writing that the spain is the source of the idolence attributed to our race.
This reason for the alleged indolence is an historical evidence. Not an assumption but a true
historical story written by Jose Rizal on how Filipinos work during the Spanish rule.
