PURPOSE OF THE CAMPAIGN

The purpose of the campaign is to promote deaf awareness across all of society, so
that the deaf and hard of hearing don’t continue to be isolated, due to mis-
understanding of this hidden disability.

Did you know that 20% of the adult population have a degree of
hearing loss?

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Support the campaign by providing your employees with the training, and promoting
the campaign through campaign posters, as well as online through social media.

WHAT’S THE COST?

We are keeping the costs low so that as many people as possible can be trained, and
consequently, become more deaf aware. There are several options:
• If you are an NHS Trust, charity or not-for-profit, the online training is currently
FREE, for unlimited employees.
• If you are a commercial organisation, the online training has a small charge
• If you are an NHS Trust, charity or not-for-profit, the hosted (SCORM-compatible)
LMS training has a charge for all organisations. This allows your HR/training records
to be automatically updated, and greater control over who accesses the training.

#WeSupportDeafAwareness
The #WeSupportDeafAwareness campaign was started by Simon Houghton,
someone with a significant hearing loss, having struggled during the COVID
pandemic.
After experiencing challenges in communicating due to lack of understanding
of deaf needs, the behaviour change specialist set up the campaign to help
organisations and their staff communicate with more empathy, patience and
kindness.
CAMPAIGN DETAILS
The objective of the campaign is to improve communication between your
staff, customers and visitors who are deaf or hard of hearing.

If someone comes to your reception and says they are struggling to hear
because they are deaf – how should your staff respond?

The posters shown above are typically displayed around offices, GP Surgeries,
Hospital departments, shopping centres etc. they alert deaf and hard of
hearing individuals that the staff understand what it is like to be deaf, and the
deaf person can feel confident that their needs will be met, should they
struggle to communicate effectively.

It tells the deaf person that the organisation supports the campaign, and that
their staff have gone through the online training...
WHAT IS THE TRAINING?
Each employee is provided with access to the online training which is modular,
and self-paced. Consists of a number of modules, quiz, and includes video
(with subtitles).

The training covers topics including:

• Deaf statistics • Tools that the deaf and HoH use
• What exactly is deafness? • What’s it like to be deaf?
• Identifying the signs that someone • Tips for communicating – face to
maybe deaf face, video and telephone
• ...and much, much more!

A RECENT TESTIMONY...
Hello Simon,

I just wanted to say thank you for putting together such a comprehensive training that
includes so much information around how to interact with people that have a hearing
impairment and how to make sure that they understand and are included in group
conversations. I’ve been interacting with people with a hearing impairment my whole
life and I can honestly say that there isn’t anything else like this out there for people to
learn and understand more about how to interact with people with a hearing
impairment. Thanks so much!

All the best with #WeSupportDeafAwareness 😊
