TEL400: Innovation in Education Endeavors

Lesson 7: Signature Assignment Presentation

Planning Tool
Name: Lindsay Johnson-Hiner

You may begin planning your script for your Innovation multimedia presentation as early
as you prefer. When considering the content of your script, be sure refer to the
Signature Assignment Rubric. What elements do you need to cover in your Innovation
video? What is the message you want to portray and how are you going to deliver that
message?

Use this Innovation multimedia presentation document to review the outline of your
presentation, draft a script, and include materials you will need and resources you will
be referencing.

MultiMedia Presentation Outline

Your video will be 3-5 minutes in length. Your outline will include the
following topics, which are also listed in the rubric and instructions.
A. The community.
Summarize what you uncovered about the community you are focused on for this project.
This should include pertinent data from your community scan, meaningful portions of the
interview(s), and a description of how you uncovered this information and built empathy
for your user group.

In my community scan, it was hard to locate programs for just teens. Elpidia, a basketball
coach and mother of two pre-teens stated that “there is just not much offered in Nampa
for teens.”

B. Define the problem.

Clearly define the problem in the community your innovation will address. The description
must be compelling and help the audience build empathy for your end user. What policy/
policies supports, exacerbates or impedes the work? What community perceptions
support or impede the work? How are you connected to this community challenge?

I plan to be an educator in the city of Nampa. All of my in-laws and their children all live
there. This will be my community. I want children, specifically teenagers to feel that they
have a place to go. A place to make friends, a place to have fun, and a place to get help if
they need it.

C. Possibilities
Describe your possible solutions (innovation) and the tests you completed. What other
innovations are out there to address the problem? How is your solution unique? Consider
the feedback you received from your end users, mentors, and your colleagues in this
course that shaped revision. How did their feedback impact your final innovation?

We could ask the boys and girls club to have more programs for teens. We could
promote the after school sports at the high school. My unique solution would be to create
a safe place for teens to hang out, have fun, and meet other teens. They will be able to
come after school and get homework help, play video games, have a snack, and
socialize with new people. Receiving feedback from my peers made me realize that this
should happen everyday after school.

D. Professional Identity
Who are you in this problem and innovative solution? How has uncovering the problem
and creating an innovation become part of your professional identity? Share your
professional purpose statement. Why should we invest in the innovation you are
proposing?

I am Lindsay and I inspire people through hands-on, engaging teaching methods

that motivate people to achieve great results.

I am a future educator who wants my community to have the resources they

need to feel supported. Uncovering the lack of support is going to keep my eyes
open for other areas that need support. Investing in this innovation means
investing in our future. Helping teens thrive will help them be successful not only
now, but tomorrow as well.

E. The Proposal
What are you asking viewers to do? How can they contribute to and support your
innovation? What will they get in return? What will your end users get and how will they
be better off and how will the world be a different, better place when your innovation is
enacted? How will you be different when this innovative idea becomes reality?

I am asking for support in starting this afterschool program for teens. They can
contribute by volunteering or donating money which will help pay for sports equipment,
video games, and snacks. You will know this innovation is working when dropout rates
go down. I believe that this afterschool program will give kids a place they can make
friends, build skills, and stay out of trouble. When this program is successful I will
continue finding ways to use the human centered design to find more innovations to
support my community.

Presentation Script
(use the outline/content guide above to draft a script)
A. The community.

Nampa, Idaho is a growing town with a population around 100,000 people. (U.S. Census,
2019). According to the Nampa School district’s website, there are a total of 5
highschools located in Nampa. Although there are so many schools, there is a lack of
community resources for teenagers. Nampa community member and mother of two pre-
teens, Elpidia, stated that “there’s not much offered in Nampa for those in the teen age-
range.”

B. Define the problem.

As a future educator of Nampa, this concerns me. As Elpidia stated “If kids aren’t in an
afterschool program they are probably getting into trouble or just home by themselves.”
As a teen, I never felt I had a place that I fit in, a place to go. I want to make sure all
teenagers have a place to go no matter who they are.

C. Possibilities

So where do we start?
Do we make more sports teams?
Do we talk to the boys and girls club?
I know! We create our own unique after school weekly hangout. This will be a safe place
for teens to hangout, have some fun, or even get homework help.
My peers helped me realize that weekly was not enough time.
Let’s make this an everyday thing!
