Capstone Project Proposal Draft

Name of student: Angelica Kim Date: Oct. 23/19

Teacher: Ms. Lacroix Block: 1-2

The Capstone strand I have chosen is the Service Oriented Strand.

Proposed title for my Project Proposal: (write the proposed title for your Capstone Project in one
clear sentence):
"Hope for the Homeless."

Choose one of your stored inquiry questions from grade 9 or create a new inquiry question that
interests you for further research. It should be a question that connects with a purpose, passion
or personalized area of interest for you.
My inquiry question is:

What can I do to help the homeless to get back on their feet?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are
choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry
connect to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

I want to help people in need, starting with those who are local. When I'm in the car, I always
see homeless people with a sign asking for help but I never had the chance to help. This has
actually been a project that I've been wanting to carry out since grade 8 but never been able
to. This area of inquiry connects to my passion because I want to help people. I'm not
completely sure of what I want to be, but I know that I want a job where I can help people. My
capstone project is a personal interest to me because homeless people are the most visibly in
need. Many people around me may need help, whether it be financially or health-wise, but
they tend to hide it so I never know, but homeless people leave their pride and beg for help on
the streets. Instead of asking people individually if they need help when they've never reached
out to me for it, it would be more worthwhile to help those who are reaching out for help. Why
look for someone who needs me when there are people who have already asked?

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this

area of inquiry?

I walked in the Coldest Night of the Year walk which is an event made to raise awareness for
homeless people who don't have a place to go during the cold winter season. It was during the
"coldest night of the year" and it gave me an idea as to how hard it must be for these people
who don't have homes and are exposed to such harsh conditions every year. Although I'm
fortunate enough to be unaware of how they feel, I got to take a short walk in their shoes.

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What
connections does this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

My intended career area at this point in time is anything that can help people. I've never had
an interest in sitting at a desk, working at a computer all day, I've always wanted to do
something to help somebody. I'd like to be a health practitioner of some sort and if not,
anything that helps others and their wellbeing.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core
competencies will be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

Math would be connected to my project because the purchases need to stay within the budget
since I'll be buying supplies with my own money. I'll have to look up places where I can buy
larger quantities for a lower price and how I can stretch every dollar. In this capstone project,
all three core competencies are connected. Communication is required to ask my mentor for
help and when distributing the care kits to the homeless people. I would want to approach
everyone involved in this capstone project with respect because they're doing me a favour.
Thinking is highly involved in this capstone project as well. As previously stated, I need to
think of strategies on how to stay within my budget ($50, may be changed depending on how
much items cost and what will be bought) and how to buy more for less. I also need to plan on
when to meet my mentor, what questions to ask, etc. as well as where to find homeless
people to actually distribute this to. The last core competency is personal and social. This
project shows my determination on helping other people as well as being able to connect with
new types of people I've never encountered before. It helps me to understand and grow as a
person to see life from a new perspective.

Capstone Presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to
present your project. Outline and give details about how you will present your project once
completed. You may use a combination of mediums.
• Electronic portfolio: Prezi or PPT
• Physical portfolio
• Website
• imovie presentation

I will be using a powerpoint to present my project. In the powerpoint, the

suppplies I gathered, steps I took, how I set up the care kits, how I
distributed them, the people's reactions and a brief description of my overall
reflection (extended reflection on the entire project will be typed on a
seperate page) will be included. Pictures and videos will also be included in
the powerpoint.
Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what
will you research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced
at the end of this project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your
proposal.

I will research what homeless people need the most in order to make wise purchases instead
of buying anything I think that they might need in order to help give them motivation to get
back on their feet. In the end, after collecting all the necessary materials, they will be
organized in a small bag to distribute.

Project Design Team: who needs to be on your project design team to make this
project/research effective? To support your work? Outline the team and their roles.

My mentor will provide me with their knowledge on what homeless people need most, what
would benefit them the most and how I should approach this project. I will be making the list of
what we need and make the purchases/organize the kits. My friend will be coming with me
when distributing the care kits so it ensures safety as well as adult supervision (approaching
strangers isn't always safe!)

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and

skills you will need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to
access/learn all of the resources necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail
your plans.

I'm going to need my phone, laptop, youtube, websites, mentor, etc. to be able to document
the process as well as research what other people have done and what they would have done
differently so that I don't make the same mistake as them/get inspiration from previous
experiences. My plan to be able to access all this is through emailing or calling to be able to
find someone who is willing to mentor me, as well as meeting them in person to ask questions
and recieve advice from them.

Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will

you need to help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you?
What is your plan to access the mentorship/community connections necessary for this
project?

A good mentor would be someone who works or volunteers at the salvation army, Gateway of
Hope, soup kitchen, or any other organization that works with homeless people. My plan to
access the mentorship/community connection is by emailing them about this project and
asking if they would be willing to support my capstone project, and if I don't hear from them in
a week, I'll call them directly.
Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee
that might affect progress with your Capstone Project?

Some limitations and potential obstacles that I forsee that might affect progress with my
Capstone Project are staying within the budget, finding a mentor and finding homeless people.
I understand that most people are busy with work, family, etc. and don't have the time to help
me so I will have to ask a lot of people in order to find one person who can mentor me.

Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about
your project that you feel should be included in your project proposal.

I may have to consider fundraising money if my budget is too low.

References: Provide a literature review or links for 5-10 references: research, videos, etc.
that offer some preliminary research you have done for your project that shows you are able
to access the key information that you will need to be able to complete this project/work.
