Capstone Project Proposal Draft

Name of student: Jinah Kim Date: Oct.18th. 2021

Teacher: Ms. Lacroix Block: Block A

The Capstone strand I have chosen is a project capstone

Proposed title for my Project Proposal: (write the proposed title for your Capstone Project in one
clear sentence): Making a medical book for children

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that
connects with a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that
you cannot just google an answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

Will reading a book about specific field can increase children’s interest in that field?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are
choosing to investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect
to your passion(s), purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

I chose my inquiry question because I wondered if children get interested in the medical field
when they read a book that provides medical information. I think increasing children’s interest
in the medical field is essential. Because we are leaving creatures, we are affected by many
diseases and naturally become weak as we get older. Many children cannot fully understand
some medical information, and studying medical information is also difficult for adults because
it requires profound and more specific knowledge. Children are an essential key for the future
because they will be the leader who decides how our society would work. Suppose they know
how our bodies work and why and how bodies are affected by other factors. In that case, they
can help our community to have a better medical condition for others because their profound
knowledge would be helpful. Also, we are undergoing Covid-19, so it would be great if children
could gain some information to understand the current situation by reading my book.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this

area of inquiry?

 Factors that make children want to read: humorous, adventurous, containing standard
features of children, including images of animals, and happy ending
 Children can analyze their emotions and interests through reading books
 Readers can get various experiences through life lessons that reading gives,
investigating different topics and getting diverse perspectives
 Children learn independent learning skills by selecting the book they are interested
in.
 Virus is a very small particles with genetic material that can cause disease by

0
attacking our bodies.

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What
connections does this inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

I value the harmony of the community the most, so I want to become a person who can
contribute to the community’s development and get a sense of satisfaction by helping others.
My career goal is to work in the medical field to help others’ medical conditions. Therefore, my
capstone project is making a medical book for children, and I’m curious about how my book
will affect children. I’m going to research and study medical information specifically because I
need to understand the concept to explain the idea to others fully. Therefore, I can get a
profound understanding of some medical information and use the knowledge that I gain for my
future career.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core
competencies will be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

Personal & Cultural Identity

Strengths:
 I understand how what I value has and will shape my choices
 I understand how to use my strength and abilities to my advantage, and I can
explain how I use them to contribute to my community.
 Area of Improvement
 I understand that culture is a broad concept that includes my geographic
region, nationality, sex/gender, age, ethnicity, sexuality, language, and
religion.

Because I know well about my values, strength, abilities, I can show the connections
between my personal interest and the project is solid, and I can use them effectively to
achieve my greatest goal which is to contribute to the society.

Capstone Presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to
present your project. Outline and give details about how you will present your project once
completed. You may use a combination of mediums.
o Electronic portfolio: Prezi or PPT
o Physical portfolio
o Website
o imovie presentation
o YouTube channel

I’m going to make an electronic portfolio by using PowerPoint. For the first slide, I will
introduce my capstone project: strands, what my project is, the purpose, and some inquiry
questions. For the second slide, I will show some connections between my future career and

1
the project and how they relate to my interests. For the third slide, I will describe the steps
needed for the project with details by showing my timeline. Then, I will present my books
specifically: about its storyline, main characters, the audience of the book, platform that I use
for publishing the book. For the final slide, I will explain things that I can achieve through the
project and how this project can affect me.

Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what
will you research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced
at the end of this project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your
proposal.

I will make a medical book for children that provides information about viruses with the
common cold. Through the academic research that I completed, I could learn what factors can
inspire children's interest and get their attention, how to come up with a good storyline, what
characteristics of the image can affect children's emotions, how reading affects children's
ability, what viruses are and how they work, some treatment for the common cold, symptoms
of the common cold, why do we get the common cold, and how the vaccine works inside of
our bodies. I will outline my book by using this information. Since this book aims to help
children understand the concept of viruses and how they affect our lives, I must explain the
information appropriately based on the children's age. Therefore, I will do more academic
research about viruses and vaccination.

First of all, I will finish setting my storyline with characters and backgrounds and then contact
my mentor to get advice for making a better storyline by revising it several times with details.
For now, I will use animals as characters and show how we get the common cold and how
medicine or vaccine can treat the common cold with figurative language and vibrant images.
As soon as I finish my storyline, I will decide the book's title, divide the storyline per page with
dialogue, and create characters in each situation by using Adobe illustrator. Before beginning
them, I will watch some tutorial videos that teach me some essential skills for making graphic
design. Then, I will use those skills to make the cover of the book and other images. After
creating images, I will put the text together with them. I need to consider the size of the font,
location of the text, word choice, grammar mistakes, and flow of the writing. Then, I will
proofread the whole story and make a final check before I publish it. I'm going to research how
I can advertise my book effectively and publish it more efficiently. When I find a suitable
platform, I will contact the company and ask for specific information about publishing a book.

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and

skills you will need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to
access/learn all of the resources necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail
your plans.

I’m going to use adobe illustrator for creating images of the book, so I need some skills for
developing the quality of graphic design. I will watch some videos on Youtube to learn and
remind myself of some necessary skills. However, I’m willing to ask for some help from my
previous graphic design teacher if I need further assistance.

2
Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will
you need to help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you?
What is your plan to access the mentorship/community connections necessary for this
project?

My mentor is Jungsoo Lee, my English tutor, majored in literature art at UBC and has various
experiences teaching English to students. Because I need a good storyline to make my book
successful, I want my mentor to help me develop my writing skills, correctly form sentence
cohesion, and make fewer grammar mistakes. So I’m going to ask for some advice from him
when I finish my rough draft of the storyline and when I do a final check.

Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee
that might affect progress with your Capstone Project?

Because the topic of my book is science, it requires a deep understanding. Therefore, I need
a lot of efforts to specifically study the concepts, Also, I’m not professional at creating graphic
design, so it might take some time to make images that I want.

Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about
your project that you feel should be included in your project proposal.

Cost of the project

 Adobe illustrator - $27.99/month
 Making an eBook – about $30~$90

References: Provide a literature review of 5-10 PEER REVIEWED ACADEMIC references:

research, videos, etc. that offer some preliminary research you have done for your project
that shows you are able to access the key information that you will need to be able to
complete this project/work. Your list should be written using correct APA formatting.
