Capstone Project Proposal Final Copy

Name of student: Brandon Chow Date: April 12, 2022

Teacher: Mrs. Volkenant Block: B

The Capstone strand I have chosen is: Project Strand

Proposed title for my Project Proposal: (write the proposed title for your Capstone Project in one clear
sentence): How to increase Student Engagement through warmup games in P.E. 10 Co-Ed

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that connects with
a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that you cannot just google an
answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

How can I acquire the most student engagement/motivation in the activity or lesson given?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are choosing to
investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect to your passion(s),
purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

I chose this question because I feel strongly about helping people and that some people choose not to
participate which is detrimental to one’s learning. This area connects to my purpose to become a high
school teacher as teachers shape the future of our society. As a teacher, student engagement is severely
important to ensure that the student is invested in the lesson to unlock their learning potential.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this area of inquiry?

Some background knowledge I have in this area of inquiry is that I have peer mentored within our school in
Grade 11 and 12 for Auto Mechanics and P.E. 10 Co-ed. I have also various experiences in helping other
people such as having 100+ volunteer hours with the REC Leadership course at our school. Some of these
experiences include “Big buddy, little buddy learning” where we went to Yorkson Creek Middle to mentor,
hosted a Halloween event for staff children, etc.

0
Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What connections does this
inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

I plan to go to Brock University to earn a Kinesiology Undergraduate Degree. After, I intend to travel back
to BC and become a high school teacher which would allow me to feel fulfilled by helping others and
teaching the future of our world.

Interdisciplinary and core competencies connections: What subject areas and core competencies will
be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

Some subject areas connected to my project include Physical Education, Leadership and Peer Mentoring.
These subjects are connected to my project due to the leading and peer mentoring in a Physical Education
Co-ed 10 class. All these subjects revolving around the most important core competency, communication.
Communication will be displayed as it is crucial to acquire, present and interpret the data collected. I must
analyze the data collected which falls under the Critical Thinking category to answer my inquiry question to
connect and engage with others. I can also think creatively when developing ideas to modify the warmup
games. With any good capstone project, one must have self-determination and know their own personal
strengths and abilities and use them to their advantage when forming their capstone project which I have
done to understand and use these skills to make a project I am passionate about. Overall, my project can
easily be connected to all 6 core competencies.

Capstone Presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to present your
project. Outline and give details about how you will present your project once completed. You may use a
combination of mediums.
o Electronic portfolio: Prezi or PPT
o Physical portfolio
o Website
o imovie presentation
o YouTube channel

I plan to use a presentation style that consists of Google Slides and placing my analysis and feedback on a
Google Docs paper. I will also collect feedback using a Google Forms form that indicates the students’
favourite warmup activity and why they enjoyed it.

Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what will you
research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced at the end of this
project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your proposal.

1
For my final capstone project I will investigate the topic of student engagement. I propose that I will run
interactive warmup activities for the P.E. 10 Co-ed class I peer mentor. Student engagement and
participation is extremely important to a student’s learning, especially in gym classes where student
participation is detrimental.

The ideal goal is to have every student, engaged, ready to learn and are involved however this may
unfortunately be an impossible challenge known to many teachers. I wish to solve this issue by finding the
most student engagement in teaching. This is crucial in becoming a better teacher as once the teacher
understands this, they are able to manipulate the ways in which they teach to improve this across all
students and their various learning styles that cater to them.

To execute the topic of discovering the most student engagement, I will run interactive warmup games with
the class and revise them for improvements and variations. Once completed, I will analyze and critique
them, and then play the revised version in the upcoming days. After both versions of all games have been
played I will Survey the participants using a Google Forms questionnaire asking which game was their
favourite and why. Then, I will analyze and critique all the games and come to a conclusion with an
explanation of why which games displayed the most student engagement and why some didn’t using
evidence collected.

Due to this being an ongoing question in the teaching world and a journey of process, I feel as though a
final product could be accepted as my analysis and conclusion on the project and the survey responses to
the questionnaire. This information collected and my analysis can be used in further research of becoming
a better teacher. Overall, my final product is my experience in teaching others and my journey and I will
share the information through a Google Slides presentation during my exit interview.

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and skills you will
need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to access/learn all of the resources
necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail your plans.

For this project, I will need technology for research and feedback and easy access to my mentors through
Microsoft Teams. I will also need to practice my analytical, communication, and leadership skills to be
successful in completing this project. These skills are crucial to the completion of the project due to the
role I must undertake in leading others in a positive, involving attitude and then analyzing and critiquing
the warmups to better match for the group to discover the maximum amount of student engagement.

Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will you need to

help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you? What is your plan to access
the mentorship/community connections necessary for this project?

My mentors to assist me in my capstone project are Mr. Marsh and Mr. Weiss. These are trusted
professionals within the P.E. community of our school that can provide valid and meaningful contributions

to my project ideas. Mr. Weiss is also my sponsor teacher for Peer Mentoring and Mr. Marsh was in his
practicum for his PDP which makes him a credible source with his similar experiences as I.

Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee that might
affect progress with your Capstone Project?

A potential obstacle that could affect my progress of my capstone could be the rotation of the assigned
location for our gym class. I could bypass this problem by scheduling when to perform these activities.

Other considerations: List and detail any other related information/ considerations about your project
that you feel should be included in your project proposal.

When beginning to brainstorm ideas for my capstone project, I found myself struggling to generate new
ideas that relate to my inquiry. To be successful, I need to treat and approach this project as it were a
science lab as it is more relatable and understandable to my brain. An example would be that I view the
different warmups as trials while the controlled variable would be the same group of children.

References: Provide a literature review of 5-10 PEER REVIEWED ACADEMIC references: research,
videos, etc. that offer some preliminary research you have done for your project that shows you are able
to access the key information that you will need to be able to complete this project/work. Your list should
be written using correct APA formatting.
