Water-Based Surface Infusion Technology

Processing Guide
Description
AquaCoolTM is a water-based surface coating with a very high
content of phase-change material. It is a post treatment and can
be applied to foam (molded or slab), fabric or fiber to create a
breathable, flexible, and durable coating with excellent
adhesion to various substrates such as pillows, mattress layers,
toppers, seat cushions, and other comfort products.

Storage & Handling
The shelf-life of this product is 6 months from the manufacturing date if stored unopened under recommended
conditions described. AquaCool should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place between 40-100°F (4-40°
C). Do not store in a location where material is likely to freeze. Once frozen, AquaCool products cannot be
recovered. Keep storage containers closed to minimize water loss and prevent mold growth. Most AquaCool
products will separate over time and must be mixed prior to use. Frequently opened containers are more
susceptible to mold growth. When handling AquaCool products, standard safety precautions should be followed
and eye protection and nitrile or PVC gloves should always be worn. This section does not contain all safety data
pertaining to AquaCool products. With each product, please consult the appropriate SDS for additional
information.

Processing Information
Mixing Requirements
AquaCool will separate over time and needs to be Recommended Tote Mixer
thoroughly mixed to form a homogenous mixture PCT Tote Mixing Station
(without lumps or particle settling) before it is
applied by spray or roll coating. Storage times longer
than 4 weeks may result in a soft layer of solids at the
surface that can be reconstituted easily with the tote
or drum mixers recommended below. Peterson
Chemical Technology offers a specialized tote mixing
station that can be used to ensure proper mixing of
AquaCool products. When mixing a tote or a drum, do
NOT mix air into the liquid. For drum quantities, if a
mixer is not available, a drum roller can be used for a
minimum of 30 minutes to ensure proper mixing.
During application, continued mixing with low
agitation is required to maintain a smooth
consistency, especially if thermally conductive
additives are present. To ensure quality of
application, it is recommended to control the
temperature of the process tank in order to maintain
viscosity.
Recommended Drum Mixer Application Methods
Industrial Double Auger mixers are
available in both 110V (60hz) and AquaCool products may be applied by spraying or roll coating with constant recirculation
230V (50HZ) depending on power to prevent settling. Roll coating is the preferred method of application for slab foam as it
requirements
provides a clean and efficient process with high transfer efficiency. Spray coating is the
preferred method for pillows and other uneven surfaces as it allows for a more even
coating.
AquaCool products can also be sprayed from a pressurized mixing tank or recirculating
pumps and administered by a hand-held spray gun or an array of mounted spray
nozzles. It is recommended to use a nozzle orifice size between 0.06-0.13” (1500-3300
microns) depending on the AquaCool product. Using an orifice size outside of this range
will result in larger droplets creating an undesirable final appearance. Peterson Chemical
Technology can recommend roll coater or spray system suppliers suitable for a given
application.
Curing Requirements
After the application of AquaCool products, the coated surface needs to be properly cured to produce a breathable,
flexible, non-tacky and durable final product. AquaCool products can be cured using infrared technology, heated
forced air curing at 180-230°F (82-110°C), or ambient temperature curing. Note that curing AquaCool at
temperatures above 230°F (110°C) may result in decreased quality of the final product. To ensure that the coated
surface is properly cured, moisture levels of the coated surface can be checked. A properly cured surface should
have a moisture level of less than 3%. Please note that the curing time will depend upon the air volume,
temperature, humidity, substrate air flow and thickness, and the coating weight of AquaCool.
Packaging
Once cooled and fully cured, AquaCool products may be packaged using flat or roll packing methods. To prevent
possible adhesion and delamination of AquaCool, products should not be packaged coating-to-coating side even
after fully cured.

Colorant Guide
The color of AquaCool can be changed with the addition of colorants into virtually any color. The addition of
conductive materials may cause the base AquaCool color to change which may limit the overall color options.
Please consult with Peterson Chemical Technology for compatible color options.
AquaCool needs to be thoroughly mixed to form a homogenous mixture (without lumps or particle settling) before
adding colorants. We recommend preparing a concentrated blend of AquaCool and colorant as follows. Remove a
small amount of AquaCool (~11-55kg) and add colorant. Mix using high shear to ensure proper dispersion of the
colorant. Once the concentrated blend is fully mixed, add to the larger container while mixing thoroughly.
Colorants can be added directly to AquaCool while thoroughly mixing; however, this is not recommended as it can
result in uneven dispersion of colorant.
Cleaning Guidelines
To prevent difficult removal of AquaCool, thoroughly rinse with water immediately after usage.
Spray lines, spray tips, rollers, or any other equipment exposed to the liquid AquaCool should be
cleaned promptly with water. AquaCool products are difficult to clean from a surface once cured,
so thorough rinsing with water after usage is recommended. If a surface is not cleaned properly,
soak the surface with water to help loosen hardened material before removal. Proper PPE such as
safety googles and gloves are recommended while cleaning or handling AquaCool products. Please
refer to the SDS for more information.
