ANSWERS AND GRAMMAR ANALYSIS

Note how ‘although’ and ‘even though’ appear regularly in this type of
construction-They are ‘cousins’ of In spite and despite!

1 In SPITE OF THE RAIN we went to the beach.

You have to change the verb ‘raining’ to a noun ‘rain’.

2 DESPITE THE NOISY HOTEL, we enjoyed our stay there.

‘Despite the hotel being noisy’ is possible, but there’s no need to complicate life!

3 In SPITE OF PLAYING WELL, they lost the match.

Remember-you must use gerund after ‘in spite of’.

4 DESPITE THE FACT (THAT) THEY had booked tickets, they didn’t go to the theatre.
The use of ‘that’ is optional.

5 DESPITE HAVING ENOUGH MONEY, he decided not to buy it.

‘Despite the fact he had enough money’ would be too many words-6.
Don’t forget-you must use gerund after ‘despite’ if there is a verb next.

6 DESPITE GETTING/ IN SPITE OF GETTING up late, she arrived at work just in time.
You can choose here because both are followed by gerund.

7 We decided to have a picnic IN SPITE OF THE BAD weather.

You have to convert ‘the weather was bad’ to ‘the bad weather’ but you must never
change the meaning of the sentence.

8 DESPITE WINNING / IN SPITE OF WINNING the last 3 matches, Liverpool only

finished 2nd in the league.
