EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE SCALE

INTRODUCTION:
The American dialect society selected Emotional Intellence in 1995 as a new useful term. This was further flourished
by Daniel Goleman's (1995) bestseller - Emotional Intelligene: Why it can matter than 1Q. This book familiarized
aspects of academic work on emotional Intelligence that was first published by Professor John Mayer, Peter Salovey
and colleagues in 1990. The work of Professor Howard Gardner on interpersonal & intrapersonal intelligence was
first published in 1983. Peter Salovey and John Maye, presented research findings which suggested processing
information an about mathematical, verbal or visuo-spatial problems contained in traditional intelligence tests.
According to Gardner there are other intelligences like the ability to understand and regulate one's own emolions
(intrapersona intelligence) and the ability is understand and manage relationships (interpersonal intelligence). In
Goleman's book the argument was put forward that success at work and in achieving, valued life goals was not due to
IQ but due to Emotional Intelligence. It was also portrayed by Goleman that emotional intelligence is predominantly
environmentally determined and could be improved by training .

Recent research sketched conceptualized emotional intelligence into two distinct ways. Firstly, it has been
conceptualized as a set of abilities for processing emotional intelligence and secondly an a set of personality traits.
Mayer, Caruso and Salovey (2000) ability model, emotional intelligence refers to the abilities that are used to process
information about one's own emotions and emotions of others.
The four skills explored by E.I are self and social awareness, self and relationship management.
Self Awareness: Ability to recognise one's emotions as they happened and understanding the general tendencies for
responding to different people and situations. The competencies include self awareness, self-confidence and
self-asessment.
Social awareness: Understanding where the other person is coming, from and therefore his/her existence. Empathy,
organisational awareness & service orientation and some of the competencies explored.
Self Management: Using awareness of one's emotion to choose what to say or do in order to positively direct one's
behaviour. Thus managing self development through self control, trustworthiness, adaptability, conscientiousness,
achievement orientation and initiative.
Relationship Monagement: Using awareness of another person's emotions to choose what to say or do. Some of the
skills competencies used here are developing others, leadership, influence, communication, change catalyst, conflict
management, teamwork & building. This scale was developed with 106 items and was put forward to 50 judges, from
which 34 were selected and was standardized .The same was administered to 200 executives and correlated. The
dimensions that are explored in the emotional Intelligence Scale by Hyde, Pethe & Dhar as as follows:
Self Awareness (A) : This refines the concept of believes with outward and inward criticisms. It constructs rapport
bulding that helps to understand & maintain personal relationships both personal and professional.
Empathy (B) : The process of feeling and understanding the array of emotions of others in the environmental setting.
Application of listening skills and ability to adopt other perspectives & handle multiple demands.
Self Morivation (c): The ability to model one to others which further leads to inspiration The power to make
intelligent decisions and thus balancing emotions and using the cognitive methods of reasoning.
Emotional Stability (D): Openness to novel ideas and new information by trying to stay composed with good and
bad situations .The ability to pursue goals with obstacles and setbacks along with the presence of stressors.
Managing Relations (E): Lack of dependence on others & perceived as friendly and outgoing.A sense of autonomy
and charge.
Integrity (F): Standing up for one's beliefs and being aware of the weakness. Carrying individualistic perceptions
and diluting it to the environment.
Self Development (G):Identifying and separating emotions and developing one even if the situation does not
demand. The ability to be aware of one's own strengths and weaknesses so that the individual can challenge
situations methodically.
Value Orientation (H) : The ability to maintan standards of honesty and integrity in society. The process of
confronting unethical actions in the surrounding. The significance of more reasoning, is maintained here.
Commitment (I) : The process of cultivaling the act of keeping promises and being more organized. Sincerity
towards work & relalionships The status of being responsible and taking charge of the same. Thus the assurance of
taking individual ownership in situations.
Altruistic Behaviour (J): Ability to encourage people to take initiative and handle conflicts around. There is an
unselfish motive that looks only at the welfare of others.
Thus emotional intelligence motivates people to pursue their unique potential and purpose, and activates innermost
potential values and aspirations. It enables us to learn to acknowledge and understand feelings in ourselves and in
others, by appropriately responding to the environment. This would further help in applying information & energy of
information in our lives. The ability to sense, understand and effectively apply the power and acumen of emotions as
a source of human energy, information, connection and influence. The ability to perceive accurately, appraise and
express emations, abllity to access or generate feelings when they facilitate thoughts, ability to understand emotions
and emotional knowledoe & intellectual growth directs the path yo emotional intelligence.

PROBLEM:
To study the emotional intelligence of the subject by using the Emotional Intelligence Scale formulated by Anukool
Hyde, Sanjyot Pethe and Upinder Dhar (1971).

MATERIALS:
1.Emotional Intelligence Scale by Shukool Hyde, Sanjyot Pethe & Upinder Dhar
2. Norms
3. Writing materials.

VARIABLES:
• Independent Variable: Emotional Intelligence Scale.
• Dependent Variable: Responses made by the subject.

PROCEDURE:
The subject is seated comfortably in a well lit room and rapport should be built by the experimenter. The emotional
intelligence scale is administered to the subject and the demographic details are noted down. Clear instructions are to
be given to the subject. There are thirty four statements that are divided into ten dimensions. Each statement has to be
responded by making a 'tick mark' on any one cell of the five alternatives namely, 'strongly agree', 'agree’, 'uncertain’,
‘disagree’ and ‘strongly disagree: The experimenter should clarify all doubts of the subject in terms of the meaning of
statements if necessary for the subject. There is no time limit but it takes 15-20 min to complete. Responses are then
calculated with the help of o five point rating scale and interpretation is made by the help of norms.

INSTRUCTIONS:
“Here are some statements given in front of you. For every statement you have to express your views by making a
tick on any one cell of the five alternatives namely ‘strongly agree’, 'agree’, 'uncertain’, ‘disagree’ and ‘strongly
disagree’. There is no right or wrong answer, so please dont omit any statements and respond without taking much
time. Please be sincere in your responses as confidentiality will be maintained"

DATA ANALYSIS:
The responses are scored with the help of a 5 point scale
• Strongly Agree = 5
• Agree = 4
• Uncertain= 3
• Disagree = 2
• Strongy Disagree = 1
Cumulative Interpretation:
85 & above = high
52 to 84 - Medium
51 and below = low

PRECAUTIONS:
• There is no lime limit but this test should be completed in 15–20 min.
• All the statements should be clear to the subject.
• The statements should not be omitted by the subject
• The experimenter should clarify doubts regarding the meaning of any statement.
